Does anyone else think the CCTV camera idea sucks?

I think they are just going to put money into protecting the 'popular' which basically means money making tourist areas of the mountains so that nothing happens on the news. Its probably just going to make the muggers go somewhere else ... like Kalk Bay.

To me its pretty typical TM official thinking, all about miliking the tourists, stuff the locals. Maybe i'm wrong but thats my impression.

where are they going to mount those cameras? big ol telephone poles everywhere? agree - the idea sucks. why do they not set traps for those pests - how hard can it be to setup plain clothes policemen that looks like juicy tourists with cameras and cellphones?

No offence Micky but you have no clue.
CCTV does work and will have an impact.
Whats wrong with protecting the \"tourist\" areas? After all this is where most of the incidents have been happening. Get these areas safe where there are loads of \"soft\" targets. Its most likely one gang anyway that could be caught and locked away.
There are CCTV cameras that can zoom massively and these cameras won't necessary have to be mounted in sight.

Oh yes and how will they be \"making money\" by spending money on CCTV?

As much as we would like to minimise our impact on the natural environment, I think some of the arguments against CCTV are flawed:

1] I know of 2 seperate incidents where locals were mugged and am damn nervous walking on the mountain now.

2] Cops in plain clothes are a good idea, but anyone can spot an SA cop from a mile away - he wears a safari suit and has a large bushy mustache :D

3] Protecting the tourist industry will create jobs so that people don't have to resort to crime to feed their kids.

If people are so concerned about the environment then they should make an effort to protect it in real, beneficial ways.
