I was asked by somebody that wanted to pre-register for the Roc Rally about safety at the crags.

We have not had any crime issues around Waterval Boven for over a year now. Four overseas climbers went to The Last Crag of the Century (a.k.a. P-O-R-N Crag!) at the Waterfall today and had a great time.

Also FYI, new routes of all grades are falling almost everyday here. We would have finished a nice 2 pitch project at Baboon Buttress today if we did not have to fight [another] fire. Then we are not even counting the new crags we now have access to ... but perhaps we will keep the secret till Roc Rally 2008...

There seems to be confusion out there.

The handicap system and day 1 is still the big deal here. A climber can not just register for day 2 and walk away with a prize because he pointed a 32.

A climber that finishes day 1 on top of the leaderboard will also not be able to just go cruising through day 2 and tick a moderate route and still win.

There is enough time to prepare... you need to get out there on day 1 and crank lots and go out on day 2 and crank hard. Simple. But the major point scoring day is the first day.

If redpointing/flashing is you weak point, then score big on day one and if endurance is your weak point, score big on day 2. Even better - work on your weak points and score big on both days.

I wanted to find out about trad for the rally. Will there be a few trad routes that will score? Will leader and second both score it? Just want to know if it's worth lugging a rack around.

I'm also keen for trad...

Spent the last weekend cranking some new routes at the Baboons butress area and was so impressed with the work that has been done at the crags up there.Well done !

The camp site was was awsome too , just one question on the weekend the campsite was just adiquite enough for the 25 odd people that were there , but our concern was how it will manage with the 100 plus climbers at the rock rally , will there be extra ( portable toilets ) ect. not so concerned from a guys point of few but there are a few of us with wifes and kids.

We tried to book challets but they are all booked for orgonizers.

We have just returned from a short weekend away at Bovens; girlfriend and i have never been there before.

Great place for Sports climbing and good advice from guys at Roc n rope as to where to climb. We did not encounter any \"dodgy folk\" or for that matter see any near the climbs we did; generally let our guard down more then we do in our own \"backyard\" on Table Mountain.

The Tranquilitas camp site as well as the farm house (where people normally park to climb) will be used to accommodate the 250+ climbers that we are expecting later this month. Some climbers are already booked into Troutways, The Shamrock Arms, The Chateau, and other B&B's or lodges in the area.

We are making special arrangements to ensure everybody's comfort and safety for this event.

The cut-off date for pre-registrations will be 15 September, so get entries in ASAP.

On another note: we are opening routes at a rate of about 1 every second day, so expect some nice new routes at all grades for your flash bonusses (and we have not even touched the new crags yet!).

Gustav, a question about the handicap formula: On the rules sheet you state that this formula will not benefit climbers who have not been climbing at their limit for the last few months.

Say two climbers both have a hardest RP in the last 5 years of 25 and hardest flash in the last 5 years of 23. But for the first climber, these ascents happened within the last year as he has been climbing at his limit recently but the other climber has been chilling of late and has only managed a RP22 and F20 within the last year.

With your formula, the first climber has a handicap of 22 and the second a handicap of 20.5, making it easier for the climber who has not been climbing at their limit recently to score points.

Can't you maybe use the difference between all-time form and recent form to adjust for this?

Yes, in fact, we should just adjust the system to everybody's needs and current level of performance...

...but not this year.
