Hi, I did a beginners course with VentureForth this weekend and it was well worth the money. We had some well experienced climbers who made alot of effort for us. the intro course was R1350. go see their site www.ventureforth.co.za.

Contact Dave or Mark at mountainmailorder.co.za Mark sometimes will take out coarses on his day off and if he cant help speak to Dave Mark is a pro climber he is worth it and you should go for 2 or more days of climbing.

Also Mark is a little bit cheaper prob will be fine for about 500 bucks or so.

I rekon go to your nearest climbing gym and hang there for like two seconds! A climber ( more experienced than you) is bound to take you under his wing and teach the " ropes ". Climb with him/her on a regular basis. And if your lucky you might eaven land up being his/her regular climbing partner.


Im personaly not keen on R1000+ for a "quick fix"

well this is not an art class we talking about. U need a well established organization to give you formal training on skills that can save your life. there is alot of "small" things that you need to be aware of before you attempt "Table Mountain"...dont know if someone you meet at a climbing gym might mention, in passing these things. The course i was on, included all the use of equipment and a guide to take to some climbing spots.

You get what you pay for i suppose...

intro course at our gym is definitely the way to start. R150 and 2 hours of your time and you will know a lot more about the sport and whether you like it or not. then fork out R1,000 and go do the outdoor thing. we recommend ross suter or richard behne, they are the best local guides and are experienced and certified.

Ok Rob, i merely gave my unbiast anecdotal opinion on my experience...I thought it was well worth it and enjoyed the outdoor experience. I am sure the person who posed the question, can research each option within this forum and make up their own mind.

Agree with DamageInc. I did a course, admittingly a long time ago, it focuses on the safety aspects, like how to escape the system without the use of a belay knife. You will be glad if your second knows this if you need him to. After that go and hang around at the gym, When I was climbing there was no gym, I just hung around at the crags.... in lycra, lucky not to be arrested.
