Choppedy chop chop.

I actually came off this route (on one of my first outdoor climbs) onto those sif bolts, ending up with my head very close to the choss at its base. I'm glad my arms are stronger now...

Looking back I knew it was not safe, but climbed it anyway - mostly because the route was there, and I felt that I had to climb the pinnacle route at lakeside pinnacle. Had the bolts not been there I'd never have tried.

It has come to this then? Aah well, Im afraid I must add my chop vote, I'll probably go down in history as 'the guy who got that route chopped'! Im not sure how representative these polls are, best run it by rock subcom as well before making your final decision Russell.

Back in the day we just solo-ed these lines, so, even without bolts, its not as if they cannot be climbed safely. I say safely because youre not going to solo something unless you're 100% sure of success before leaving the ground, at least you'd be pretty stupid to do so. Its just a small finger of rock, if left inviolate it would have retained some dignity and an aura of unattainability, a challenge to keen climbers (how do I get up there?). Bolted its just another mundane piece of rock with an easy way up, no danger, no challenge. There are boulders in Silvermine, taller than this, that get climbed regularly without ropes or the need for bolts.

In reference to my earlier posts on this topic, if ppl are desperate for more easy sport lines; Kleintuinkop has six or seven great quality lines in the easy grades (25m ht) and a few much harder ones (20m ht). Why not consider applying for permission to develop it? Its an hour easy walk from the car, certainly no further, and much less effort, than Underside or Foreign Policy. There is also a formal path 95% of the way there, and an established informal one the rest of the way. If we could talk TMNP into re-allowing MTBing on that side of the reserve (yes please!!) to the road head this access time would diminish to 15min, tops.

I will see what the voter turnout is to see if we have a fairly representative sample. I will run it by Andy and he can talk to the subcom. I have no strong feeling either way, except that it must be one or the other.

How about bolting a harder route on it?

The reason for chopping has nothing to do with the grade of the climb. The piece of rock that the route is on is believed to be unstable hence the chopping of the route. As a secondary factor the route is considered to be crap by most.

I guess I should have asked this in the first place: what does the FA think?

I know that if I'd bolted a line I'd at least want to be asked before the route was chopped...

Although ARF has prerogative as to what it re-bolts, does it have a say to just can a route?

Chopped it will be. I will attend to it as soon as the weather and my schedule allows

I will be heading out to Lakeside this afternoon to chop the bolts on the Pinnacle Route.
