Hi,

New to the site and sport - only been climbing a few times at the Climbing Barn and Magaliesburg.

Would like to start getting my own gear together (from scratch) - and basically am looking for shoes (size 8/9), harness (male), belay device, screw gate and chalk bag. (Bare necessities)

Had a look at the Mad Rock deal on the Climbing Barn site (http://www.climbingbarn.com) and it seems like good value.

Any advice or other "deals" anyone might be aware of?

Thanks!!!

Good week to all!

That would be appreciated!

Would it be a problem posting the feedback from Mountain Mail Order here? I am sure others can benefit from it as well?

Cheers!

as a beginner, buying your first pair of climbing shoes via mail order without having tried them on is risky business.
we get a LOT of beginners at our shop walking in saying "i bought them too small or large and have worn them once, bladibla". you should go to drifters or wonderwall and try on shoes before you buy them.

Good thinking rob!! Ya these days shoes are pretty standard(same as your normal shoe size) However i do find with Sportiva you should go 2 sizes down but for your first pair maybe 1 1_2 sizes down as you tend to do alot of sloppy foot work in the beginning and you want a comfortable pair that you can have on for a couple of hours. If you going evolv you can go your same size as they tend not to stretch but if you like me and enjoy a sensitive fit im a size 10(uk) normal shoe and i went a size 9 on the Evolv Pontas and its really snug. I also have a pair of size 9 La sportiva mantis which when i got them were tight but being leather did stretch a bit and now are my all day at the crag shoes!
Please just bear in mind that my prices will be slightly off as it was 4 months ago so just compare and check with jono but ya its a pretty solid package and did alot of research on all items added, all really solid not to fancy but they do the job!

Here is the reply from MMO:
We don't have any package deals, but our prices on items are very competitive.
