I'm curious to know who removed the hangers at the far right hand section / easy section (Hansie Slim etc) @ Bobbjeaans berg, and why.

Having previously replaced missing hangers there out of my own pocket, I'd like to know who thought it would be ok to remove them again?

Possibly a total conincidence, but a new (much harder) IP route went up at that same section, with about the same number of bolts as there are now hangers missing. Again, perhaps purely coincidence, perhaps not.

If you know anything, I'd appreciate any info.

As an aside, while I'm here, there's a shitload of plastic water bottles lying around - can whoever brings them there remove them too, pretty please, with a f#cken cherry on top?

I bolted that new line... You're right, it is coincidence that the hangers are missing as I had nothing to do with it. Our climbing club Exploratio sponsored the new bolts and hangers for that line and two others that have been bolted but are not yet open. The two lines that I bolted should at least bring some difficulty to the area as one of the lines may be as hard as 30 and the other 27, but this is just an estimate. I'll post grades when I open the routes

Great stuff, really, good going. Please do update the Wiki with grades of your new routes as well as existing ones where you can? There's a few that still needs grading.

To be honest, I did not think the new route had the old hangers, they look different (different shape on the flange where the bolt goes through), but I wanted to stir as I'm quite pissed about the missing hangers.

Peace.

I replaced the missing hangers yesterday.

Any news on the hard routes?

No news about the hard lines yet... I haven't really felt the urge to go back and open them just yet. Was considering doing something in the next week or two depending on how much time I have free

Great Job Emile. Great to see people taking initiative and solving problems instead of just moaning.

Well Emile it must be the Baboons that are taking the hangars (or someone of a lower mentality) as there are quite a few hangars missing on that easy section of Bobbejaansberg.

I just wonder what the deal is there :?:

Could it really be that there are people out there who think its ok to re appropriate the hangars? Or is there someone who is desperately trying to tell us something? :jocolor: DON'T WORRY WE KNOW ABOUT THE ALIENS 8)

If I go there with a group I will take hangars....& a shotgun ....& hide in the shade & see who takes them away...& make my feelings known.

This is a nice crag to take beginners but difficult if the hangers are missing all over the show...

Once again :cyclops: what can I say WTF

Mr Smelly, there are 3 bolts which are loose in the holes which do not have hangers, I did not get around to removing & replacing them yet - facing the rock, one bolt on the far left and I think two on the far right - one first bolt and one a bit higher up. The one on the far left is easy enough to clip the second bolt, and the one on the right is manageable, but I agree, not good for a beginner.

This should leave at least 7 of the 9 routes safely climbable - if there are more hangers than that missing, then yes, some sh!t removed hangers again.

If you do find the culprit, I'll hold them down while you do the knees?

Let me know if you need help, I've got bolts too if you want to do the loose ones.

HI

It would seem that the hangers removed are those that can be reached from near the ground. I suspect it is non climbers taking mementos. We had some of this a few years ago at Strubans. I replaced the top anchor mailons and used epoxy in the thread. This solved the problem. I think if anybody catches them, they be taken to the police station the charged with trespassing and damage to property with the intention of doing bodily harm. No person has the right to remove any hangers from any climb without the bolters permission, irrespective of whether they think the climb is ugly, or should not be there or whatever reason. In or near Gauteng we have over 400 sport climbers, and only about 200 sport climbs. The sport crags in place are over used, we urgently need more good sport crags here for climbers of all grades.

Thanks Emile

There was one bolt near the top on the left that was not happy.

At this point I will wait until you have done whatever needs doing (or you can let me know when you are going & I will help).

I think Neils point is valid. I know lots of beginners just assume any bolt is a safe bolt. I tell them to try check but feel we need to protect them from themselves. In that vein is there a way of marking bolts to be "not for use"?

The unhappy one - yes, the one with the seized nut - much like I want to inflict on certain hanger thieves.... I know I'll probably get flack for this, but I can live with that one for now, given the grade (10) and that the hanger + bolt is still stuck in the rock quite solidly - not ideal, but working.

I'm not sure how to remove those "loose" bolts, my mom told me not to use my teeth for stuff like that.

I've made no plans yet, will let you know. Do you have a drill?
