Would anyone know when climbing started in SA??

I think roughly from the time there were mountains and people.

The first written up rock climbing route was that of Gustav Nefd to the top of Towerkop in 1885. The MCSA was founded in 1891.

Something you might like is the book Barrier of Spears by Pearse (you gotta love it :cyclops: ). The book is about climbing in the Drakensberg - the barrier of spears as it is called by the Zulus. If memory serves me right there is some cool stories about George Thompson in it.

Lawrence G. Green wrote of, in one of his books(which one...???), wooden stakes driven by Koi-san(?) into cracks to gain acsess to bee hives. Clearly this should be considered aid & not free climbing. This would be the earliest climbing.
