Where in SA can I have my cams reslung?

Hi

You have two choices:

1.) Find someone with a bartackker (i.e. some one who makes RATED slings etc [Try Dion Tromp http://www.hiangle.com])

2.) Do them yourself. Buy lengths of webbing, thread it through the loop and join the ends using a tape/water knot.

Please note: the tape/water knot has been shown to move over time with repeated use, so use long tails! You can see the study here

Thomson, thanks for the concern, luckily I only have WC technical friends and Metolius cams. The WC's have a forged metal back-end through which the sling goes, but the metolius cams have a cable back-end, which means it will have a single sling as well...

Shorti, what thickness tape do you have?

12mm I think, but I'm not sure now. It's that common blue stuff everyone used to make slings with.

and you think drinking good red wine and freshly ground coffee could save you from being common??

My DMM cams have given me 7 years of good service.

After 7 years it is probably time to replace the slings.

A few options come to mind.

1) Normal 22mm sling, tape knot and be done with it.

2) Dynema sling, tape knot and a tripple extendable sling.

3) Prusic cord and also a tripple extend.

Does anybody have any advice?
I'm not to sure about getting them sewn again as I don't see a great advantage.

I have a few slings on cams that will need replacing one if these days as well.

When I do it, I will get something and plan to double it up with appropriate knot. Being extendable is a major plus point.

I like colour coded gear, so would base my choice of cord or sling type on whether I can get the colour I want or not.

Not sure if they can do the slim and soft slings needed though.

as for the colour coding.
I would prefer it too, but the ones available are all 22mm wide.
If 22mm is used it will be difficult to get the 3x extension the sling need to pass throught the cam 5 times. Thus 110mm of sling. (i've just been in the Jamesons, so my math is open for debate)

ideally one would use dynema which can be as narrow as 5mm.
Problem is that dynema is not available on a roll in RSA (or is is?)
Option here is to buy a sewn sling, cut it and retie it.

I was advise that Wild Country makes a 'cordilette'. 8m of sewn dynema sling that retails for R380.
Say you use 2m per cam you'll only need about R800 to repair 8 cams.
This only comes in 1 colour though.

CityROCK has Bluewater tape in 15mm, and Bluewater cords 3-8mm that I've replaced cam slings with before. Tubular flat webbing, not dyneema.
Tape knotted, and there you go!
Just so you know...

A number of sources (including Beal's website - can't find it now that they've redesigned it) state that dyneema should not be tied with a tape knot, since it is too slippery. The recommended method is a triple fisherman's.

@ Hann, you might do well to search this website. There was a link to Black Diamond some time ago. There is an issue with the tripple extension of slings on BD cams. If I recall correctly, the BD cam wire loop may cut through the sling if incorrectly fixed.

Rack of cams 12 yrs old, with no falls, no physical, visual abuse, tight rope bodyweight hang at belay, while cleaning odd awkward placement.

If the slings aren't faded or damaged (furry is generally ok too) then they should be fine. If you are worried about the slings they can be replaced with webbing tied with a tape knot. The real wear and tear parts on cams are the springs and the trigger wires. If the cams have been used a lot then they may need replacing. There should be kits available, the manufacturer can do it or even DIY solutions.
