Muizenberg Crag Graffiti

Post by Ringalatus » Sat Oct 16, 2010 8:57 pm

We climbed on Muizenberg today, Sat 16 October, and some gormless idiot(s) have plastered the cave area, as well as both left and right of the cave, with huge graffiti letters. There must be at least 20 places on all rock painted with "10/10/10". We climbed there last Saturday and it wasn't there so presumably it was done on Sunday. Some weeks ago we were up there and found that someone had rearranged all of the rocks into benches, built a fireplace, used, and made several beds of grass, hung up plastic sheets above the beds. We trashed the lot and spread out the rocks.
Next weekend we'll try and clean up the graffiti with some scrubbing brushes and thinners.

Heya, sucks to hear about this!

Ross Suter came across the graffiti and mentioned it on FB on the morning of the 13th - he also wants to go try clean it up. Might be an idea for you to get in contact and go up together?
Mail me if you would like his contact details.

I just Googled 'graffiti removal' and there are few companies who specialise in this - might be an idea to contact them and ask them for advice?

Below are some of the suggestions (from FB) to remove graffiti:

- Brake fluid takes it off then you need a solvent to remove the brake fluid. ACETONE will work the best. R40 a litre at most hardware stores

- suggest paint stripper though to remove it from the rock. Brush some on and leave it to bubble for a couple of minutes. Then wipe off with a rag or use a scrubbing brush. May need to repeat 2 or 3 times to get it all off.

- Check out LT discount paints in Woodstock, Main Road, the staff there are pretty clued up.

Also be aware:
There's a little dude doing the rounds on Boyes Drive breaking into cars. Pale greenish se...dan with black trim. We watched him take a friends radio, from the top of our climb, and then another friend had her Taz broken into just along the way the same day.

Please post a when and where (clean up) on this forum and I'll (and whoever I can round up) certainly do my best to help out, otherwise will give a go at getting rid of the paint job next time we're up there!

Love to catch these fools and give them a new color job. Some black eye's would fit. :pirat:

I loath Graffiti: Nature spent millions of years making the rock that beautiful, only to be defiled my a muppet and a spray can-blasphemy!

sorry to deviate off the Mine but: Justin, in Badkloof property management chose to use yellow paint directly on the rock for signage, has anyone spoken to them about cleaning it off and installing signs on posts? i would argue that if we are spending our 10 bucks to get through the gate that money should go to beautifying the Kloof. there is graffiti there dated to the 1950's! i would be more then happy to spend time contributing to cleaner Badkloof walls.

Just a check in?
Is the graffiti up the mine, the hole or up muizenberg buttress (trad area)?
