Hey all,

I am planning on heading to spitzkoppe this week. Does anybody know how the rock responds to the heat? More specifically, is there a temperature at which the rock become "too hot" to climb on?

Thanks!

You don't say whether you are Sport or Trad climbing (or both)?

It should be hot up there this time of year.
Early (very early) starts are a good idea, take plenty of water and sun protection with you.

If you're into semi precious stones then take package/canned food to trade with the locals (you can also trade clothing) - Don't bargain too hard, they have a tough life up there :thumleft:

WRT the rock becoming too hot to climb on - if that happens just descend.

Hi Daniel

I used to live in Nam, and yes, the friction becomes slippery when really hot. That place can get 40 degrees regularly, so what Justin said. You don't want to get stuck 9m above your last draw (some routes are seriously run out, typical granite style)... Granite falls can be BAAAADDDD! Take a lever-biner or mailon just in case. And a pair of Prussic cords per harness - never multy-pitch without them!

Ek verlang nou...
