Hey Roger, I'm from PTA so it's a bit out of your way, but if you are ever inclined to head out to Bobbejaans / Bronkies give me a shout. I've got all the gear except spare shoes and you're welcome to come climb with.

There's a MCSA trad meet specifically for beginners next to Mountain Sanctuary park coming up on the 5th Feb (I'll be there, dying to try out trad), maybe that'll interest you too.

There is also Wonderwall in Kya Sands, they have everything to get a climber started. Its also a great place to meet climbers and make friends. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings are very popular. Check out www.Wonderwall.co.za

I am also new to the JHB and currently training at Wonderwall. The only problem is that I stay in Kempton Park area and is a long drive.

Also looking for some people to go out to the crags and climb with as my gear is pretty limited at the moment. Lacking draws and rope.

- Jonathan

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the best way to get started in rock climbing. I'm pretty much new to it - minus my "awesome" attempts at rock climbing walls. :)

Any advice, help or assistance getting started would be tremendously appreciated! I'm based in NorthRiding - JHB

I've always wanted to get into rock climbing and hopefully get into it on a serious level eventually.
I'm pretty fit and healthy guy.

Thanks,
s

Several suggestions for you (all of which will work)

1. Go to Drifters in Sandton & talk to the guys there.
2. Get in contact with the MCSA (011 807 1310) & ask about the "Orientation programme" & from this you can beef up on your knowledge & meet other climbers at the same stage as you are (an important aspect which the more experienced guys wont point out.)
2. Go to Wonderwall after that & you can climb safely & meet more climbers.

Ultimately you should want to be properly trained & learn from safe climbers & this is the way to do it. Other avenues exist of course, but just make sure that your trainers or mentors are up to the job :thumright i.e. not JUST gymrats :jocolor:
