  NEIL MARGETTS AND I ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THE OPENING OF A NEW CLIMBING AREA IN THE WEST RAND, NEAR KRUGERSDORP

Welcome to King's Kloof!!

:thumright :thumleft:

Image

King's Kloof looking South, taken from the top of the North East sector. The camps of Rocky Valley and Achterbergh can be seen on the right and left respectively.

The Wiki has just gone live and you can see the current draft of the guide here:

http://www.climb.co.za/wiki/index.php/King%27s_Kloof

The guide will be continually updated as the area develops, and also in response to your input, e.g. consensus grades emerging. There will be topos on the wiki soon.

Come one, come all. You'll love it!!

Currently 27 routes are open, grades from 12 to 23, with two bolted projects to be opened. Routes vary from short problems to 30 metre expeditions.

The potential for development is enormous. There are four sectors, one of which promises climbs in the 30s, so we're told by people qualified to say so! (South East sector).

This is not Waterval Boven but it has many good and strong natural lines, well worth a visit. It is also safe, unspoiled and a long way from main roads. It is tranquil and has a cool river. Most of all it's in the Johannesburg area and easily accessible.

Some will find a few climbs overbolted. We have gone to great lengths to ensure safety for leaders pushing their grades. If you think there are too many bolts, don't clip them all - but at your own risk!

On some routes advanced ropework will be necessary, to avoid rope drag. Please bear this in mind.

It costs R30 per person to visit King's Kloof and it's going to be worth every penny.

Your comments are welcomed. Please be constructive!!

Enjoy!!!

And I forgot to say that King's Kloof is open 7 days a week from dawn til dusk

:thumright :thumleft: Tanks guys for your hard work and dedication. Without people like you our local climbing scene would really be non-existent. Looking forward to check out the new area.

I climbed there this weekend and enjoyed it immensely.

We just struggled to figure out which roue was which as it was confusing. Can the first route be marked so that the rest of the routes can be found with a route guide?

Otherwise thanks for opening such a beautiful spot.

Does anybody know if there are any bolts on the South East Craig or is it just Trad?

Hi

There are 5 climbs now bolted on the crags upstream of the parking lot. They range from grade 16 to 21. To get there walk back over the bridge and up along the left bank just after the bridge. The path will be made clearer in due time. There is some very hard steep walls there to go for the mean men/women 8) .

Dave has also opened 3 new lines on the crag on the other side of the valley from the current spot. Both these are more morning climbing as they face north west. The current spot faces north east so it is hot in the morning. I see lots arriving early (prob used to Choss and Bronkies times) and baking in the sun. It would be a great idea to go to the new areas in the morning when they are in the shade and then to the current area in the afternoon when it is in the shade.

I see some monkey has removed some of the hangers off the easy line on the far right, cannot say why but it is not the first time climbers have removed hangers. I will make a plan to replace this weekend. Also plan to label the climbs with tags under the first bolt.
