Distraught! My blue/purple karimore backpack(70l) was stolen from next to me while we were sleeping at De Bos, Montague on saturday night(23rd july) It had my full trad rack-13 cams, nuts- slings, snap-gates, draws, gri-gri (modified for rope solo) resoled saltic sepia shoes. Blue 60m blue-water rope...
All gear has a speckle of pink spray paint on it. Should you come across it please let me know.

As I mentioned in a previous post on theft at De Bos. The next thing thats gonna happen at De Bos is bobwire everywhere. Pitty, the open free feeling always appealed to me. Unfortunately its open and free for the thieves too. I feel your pain and frustration man. Good luck.

It definitely was a fresh change to be able to leave your stuff in your tent without any concern. But that bobwire sounds like tricky stuff :jocolor: I'm sure the thieves won't know what hit them! When you trip the wire Bob jumps up out of the bushes, "Hey scumbag! I'm Bob!" BAM! :thumleft:

(Crime is always a serious issue, but I couldn't help myself  )

Haha  Thats funny! Bob wire. Good one. That was dialect spelled. Maybe the Bobwire is a better idea than barbed wire.

It's not like it's a car radio or something. I'm pretty sure there's not a lot of climbing gear flying around the back alleys. If the police do a bit of snooping they can pin the guy down quick. I know the climbing community isn't massive, but I'm sure it accounts for a steady flow of income for Montagu and it would be in the town's interest to keep it attractive for visitors.

Hey Adam, sorry to hear of your loss!
Did you report it to the police and if so what did they say?

Ouch! That seriously sucks!
We camp there quite often and always leave our stuff out in the open. About four months ago I left my swimming shorts hanging in the tree to dry while we went climbing. As we came back, two dodgy looking characters came walking out of the river bed onto the 'driff' dip outside DeBos, one with a pick n' pay bag over his shoulder. We got to the camp and I saw my shorts were missing. We drove back to town and confronted the guys about the bag. Sure as shit they had taken my pants! Nothing else....? None of the beers, food, clothing, stuff! Just the pants. Their excuse was that they didn't know it was mine....!!!!
We reported it to the police and they went after them, more just too prevent them from any other crimes.
The guys hitch a ride from Ashton to outside Montagu, then walk up the river bed to town, then snatch all our loose lying goodies. A fence won't help, no need to for DeBos to waste the money, only to have it wash away in the next flood.

So a huge thank you to the montague police.
The gear was found, well most of it...

Two baddies walked up the river and took the gear while all at camp were sleeping. They were aprehended for a seperate theft on the tuesday, and with a little detective work the police managed to find my bag last week friday.

All the stuff that was not climbing related is gone, BUT almost all the gear is back.

The lesson. Lock up
Thanks to all who helped

Well kudo's to the police. Justin, seeing as you a resident, perhaps a sort of "official" heads up from the climbing community. ?

Glad to hear it! :thumleft: But I still think that "Bobwire" is an awesome idea :)

Hearing that gear was stolen from the camp site was bad news. It is still very surprising that so little has been stolen over the last 10 years, considering how the gear is left laying around most of the time, the invite has been huge but the uptake very small, thank heavens. Please could all campers take care and put stuff away. My Mom and Dad will gladly lock important stuff in the safe. A barbed wire fence has been put up along the entire length of the camp site along the river. Montagu is a very safe place with a very good police force, well done to them, they have alway been first class and respond to any call within 5 minutes. On one occasion they returned Matt's quick draws before he could report them stolen and Ron from the Ice Cream Shop had his weed eater returned to him before he even knew it had been stolen. The police patrol our boundary every half hour, we have a barbed wire fence, it is now up to you guys to keep gear out of sight. Thanks for camping at De Bos, we will continue to make it a great place to be. (more camping showers and toilets will be built by the end of the year, little up grade for the campers).
