My ex house mate has given me his rope. Not used much. Looks and feels in good nick. My only concern is that it has been stored in the attic for the last 3/4 years. It can get really hot in there (I guess up to 50 degrees or so). What do u reckon that does to the rope? Trustworthy?

Hi Darren

Eish ! I know that when you purchase a new Beal rope it comes with a few care instructions. One of those is to not leave your rope in a car boot in the sun for extended periods of time. I would guess that would mean not for a whole day and certainly not regularly.
I know how hot an attic can get and this has been for 4 years solidly.
What would i do ? I would toss it. I would not feel comfy climbing on that rope.
good luck

Assuming it did not come into contact with molds or chemicals it should be ok. If you have any doubts, scrap the rope (questioning the reliability of your rope should never happen).

Also bear in mind that most manufacturers will tell you to replace your rope after 4-5 years of occasional use.

This rope is terribly unsafe. Please send it to me so I can scrap it for you. I'll PM my address.

I also scrap newish cars, 100 rand bills & large flat screen TVs.

Im assuming you are going to dump it as everyone is going to tell you that it is proberbly safe (except those that try to fleece it from you) which means that it proberbly won't fail and you proberbly wont die, so it would be cool if you were to dump it if someone out there of engineering background could test it and see if it was safe or not.

If in any doubt, do a drop test with a bag of sand tied to it. Just make sure the fallout zone is safe

It will probably be fine, but I would not climb on a rope that is "probably" ok. If it’s not guaranteed its safe, don’t risk it!

What I would do though is test it, just for interest sake. Tie 80kg’s to it and let it catch a factor - 2 fall. Then you can let us know whether you would have survived using it or not :thumright

I would use it on easy routes & top ropes. Have someone with experiance check it for you.

Edelrid says to store in a cool, dark, dry place.

Beal says to store in a cool shaded place, away from dampness and direct heat.

Roca says to store between 5degC and 30degC (in good storage conditions they give the rope 5years lifespan)

Bluewater says to store your rope in a dry, well ventilated area under 80degC.

If in doubt, chuck it out.

80degF probably, being American, and bringing it more or less in line with the 30degC from Roca.

Give it a wash to clean it's "pores", let it dry 100's then do the "pinch" test in sections on the rope to check if the core is still there and not been eaten by "rope mites" or just old age.. if any doubt make a hammock, or a dodgy monkey rope for the kids..

My bad, seems excessive though.
