This weekend I climbed for the first time on the Stone Wall at Gamkaberg, opening 2 new routes -
See the Gamkaberg entry on the route wiki. The wall is an inspiring sweep of rock that I have eyed out before but feared that it wouldn't offer enough gear. Getting onto it I was very pleasantly surprised - the gear is excellent, although you do have to work a little to place some of it. The climbing is superb - steep, sustained, beautiful moves on impeccable, hard, quartsitic sandstone with fantastic friction - it is right up there with the very best trad pitches I have climbed anywhere.
Its worth visiting Gamkaberg just to climb one of the routes on the Stone wall. A combination variation offers a route up the wall at only grade 19, which you wouldn't think possible looking at it. I also realized, exploring around a bit, just how much potential there is at Gamkaberg - many classics awaiting opening amongst the many cliffs in the kloof.
