Hi guys,

I have a pair of entry level evolv shoes that recently started to stink alot Its driving me and my friends crazy Im a bit cautious in trying to clean them. Any tips?

Evolv Defys? I had a pair of those. They do smell. Put them through the washing machine a couple of times and it didn't help. Someone said to put bicarbonate of soda in, that didn't help too much either. When the rubber was done I threw them away. Shoes with leather uppers don't smell.

The only thing that I found curbs the problem is to use johnsons & Johnsons baby powder after every use.

prevention is better than cure!
if you run around in flip flops and then put your dirty feet into your climbing shoes you should expect stink.
It may not be the only cause, but the above is a surefire guarantee.

Hi, when my shoes started to stick I put them in the freezer, that seemed to remove the smell quite well.

and hang them out in a well ventilated (outside) area after use.

Yes, prevention is better than cure. If you train in them, use thin socks. When out doors, try and keep your feet clean and don't wear them for extended periods at a time, to minimize sweating.

If all else fails, send them for a resole at Vertical World. They'll come back as clean as when you bought them.


O and unfortunately not true... I use Saltic Vampirs (probably on my 7th or 8th pair) and all of them starts smelling at some point in time.

I climb with a really thin shock like the Falke drynamix or Falke road cycling socks. Works like a charm...

A wise frenchmen once taught me too use the powder they put on baby pigs when they born,works like a bomb! Just ask your local pig farmer for some!

Again - if you want shoes that don't smell (or smell a lot less if you have really smelly feet anyway) get ones that are made out of leather. Not synthetic leather. My previous pairs of climbed-out Muiras are as fresh as the day I bought them, the Evolv Defys went to dustbinland they smelt so bad.

Its true, my first climbing shoes where a pair of Evolv Defys, only shoes i ever had that smelled and have never seen a pair that do not smell.
Get some La Sportiva Muiras, problem solved!

Clip them outside your bag (permanently) when not in use, so they can air & dry.

Just buy some anti-odour spray, I think I got mine from Pick n Pay. Works very well! They smell floral instead of dead cats

Thanks a lot everyone! Very helpful tips. Guess Ill have to make a few adjustments and start saving up for a pair of Muiras!

Once in a while I put mine in a pillowcase and throw them in the wash and put in the shade to dry. Sorted it out. Evolv whatever's, can't remember.

This is very true; prevention is better than cure. If you dump your your warm sweaty boots in your bag and leave them there for a week all sorts of bacteria are going to grow. leave them exposed to fresh air as much as possible. I've heard tea tree oil can be used to get rid of smells, but not tried it myself.

My shoes only go into my bag when it is raining hard. Rest of the time they ride outside on a screw gate.
