Hi,

I'm pretty new at climbing, and have enjoyed climbing at Kings Kloof on a couple occasions and also once at Bronkies. My dream is to do Trad climbing, but along with the fear of being at the mercy of gear placement, the cost to get Trad climbing gear is out of the question completely. So I want to know if there is someone willing (an patient), who would take me Trad climbing, showing me the ropes (no pun intended). This will give me a good introduction to Trad as well as what kind of gear to look for in the future.

I have my own gear (Harness, Shoes, Chalk bag, rope, draws, biners).

I'm not that great with climbing yet, and the highest grade I've sent so far is an 18.

I've been climbing for years and my hardest trad lead has been an 18, so no worries there :)

My advice would be to join the MCSA as this will give you access to the kloofs of the Magliesberg (and introduce you to trad climbers too) at least until you get a chance to come to the Cape and do some real trad down here :eye:

Nic's advice is spot on. The Jozi MCSA has regular Magaliesberg meets. Just be prepared to make a pest of yourself and demand to be taken up climbs - no-one will offer otherwise. It helps a lot if you have a route guide for the place beforehand, have a vague ticklist of routes you'd like to do, and show a lot of psyche. You can buy magalies RD's at drifters or the MCSA, and some of them are on the wiki.
Nic, what are you on about "real trad". You lot down there can never see where to go because of all the frikken roofs!
