Yip- the Tradathon is going north! The idea for the Tradathon is that it move round the country, so in 2014 it will be at Montaseel or something.

The trad rally will most likely be held earlyish next year (Feb / Mar / Apr). It will be discussed at the next committee meeting of the Magaliesberg section. I think they're meeting this week.

Funny you should ask: we had a meeting about it this morning, and in lo of other climbing events in the year the weekend of 18 May 2013 would be the most sensible. We will advertise more about it over the next couple months, but you can put that weekend on the "Busy" column of your diary.

I am quite keen to get back to the kloofs: I think the Cape Townians and Natalians forget about the gem that is Magalies, to the detriment of themselves. Andrew is right, you guys are blessed.

The initial planed date is the 21- 24 March, This is not yet confirmed on the calender but the chances of it being moved is slim.

This is a long weekend with the Thursday as a public holiday, thus if you put in 1 days leave you can climb 4 days.

I think it also coincides with the school holiday so the Capetonians can all join us in the magnificent kloofs.

Cheers

which is of course the notable month of "baard" for afrikaans boykies and hence we can aspire to sport manly facial hair like the mountaineers of old.

Black Daimond Tradathon 2013

Ram Mountaineering has scheduled the Black Diamond Tradathon to happen in the Magaliesburg (Tanquani + surrounds) on the 18 May. We are arranging a spit braai, beginner workshops, prizes and a R10k raffle.

We originally advertised the date for the 23 March but - it being a long weekend - the folk at Mountain Sanctuary were being rather difficult about accomodation arrangements. In addition, that weekend is only 2 weekends after the Rory - and we don't want to "dilute" either event.

While there is a chance that the kloofs will be chilly, the weather should be more stable than March - and less likely to be rained out.

Advertising and more details will be published in the next SA Mountain Mag and on on-the-edge.co.za at the beginning of next month.

Team Ram Mountaineering

Simon, us old okes here behind the boerie-curtain are very serious about the spelling and our placenames, we're not like those okes in Limpopo without textbooks. If you are going to insist on hosting your rally in "Tanquani" we're gonna start referring to "The Rocklands" so much that google no longer recognizes "Rocklands". :P :jocolor:

emile "that old oke protesting"
because we'll always find something to protest about.

Tanquani sounds like a combination of Tonquani and Tanqueray (Gin). Not a bad thing I guess 8)

if you vaalies want to do something worthwhile, other than bickering away on the interwebs..... how about collating the magaliesberg RDs in a single PDF file and make it available on climb.co.za
the TM tjoppers have a nice guidebook and one can find routes fairly easily.
i'd hate to wander around the kloofs wondering where the dickens i am.

Mok, it's happening. If you have cool photos, send them to Mr. Porter (or to me and I'll forward them). A Magalies guide is a mighty big job as you can probably imagine. Just finding some of the routes can be a real challenge.

Just to add to the nitpicking, it's Magaliesberg; burg means town, berg means mountain. Tonquani is a difficult word, Tonks will do, everyone will know what you're talking about.

Just for interest's sake, will we be allowed to climb any route in any kloof (in the Tonquani complex)? Or will there be a list of routes we can choose from? I remember there being an idea to run it as a sort of treasure hunt; hide prizes on certain routes, who-ever gets there first takes the prize. I suppose we will have some sort of bonus point system for onsights, otherwise the foreigners won't stand a chance. Actually the Rock Rally way will work fine. Bonus points for certain routes, longer and harder routes will have to count more points. Most importantly I think we should warn people about the dangerous routes for the sake of the virgins; minimum height required for Last Rites, that sort of thing. I can help with that. We should probably identify rap points too.

Rockon, Cedarberg camp site will get trashed if we all camp there. I'm not too keen on that. Go to the annual camp-fire meet if you want to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

I'm really exited, it's going to be awesome!

This vaalie wants to bicker about PDF's vs a normal page on the Wiki.

I get why everyone wants a PDF, but it's hard to keep updated. PDF printers are a dime a dozen - why not keep the wiki pages updated as normal pages and everyone who wants a PDF can print it as a PDF and / or every now & again someone can just post an updated PDF from the info already on the page?

Best of both worlds I think. Does that make sense or am I missing something?

Ebert: as per Simon's post the date has been confirmed as 18 May. There is no need for any further public debate on the matter.

The structure- as I said above- will be the same as Tradathon, and as such its primary goal it to get people who boulder and sport climb to try trad, as we find the most common reason people don't go is because they don't have the opportunity to do so. There after comes fun other activities, and if you take a look at the thread about the TM Tradathon you will see competition wasn't mentioned by us organizers but by participants. The only comp there was the rack raffle.

We were reluctant to have a trad rally simply because of safety. While sport climbing can happen safely at a rate of knots, trad (being slower) creates more opportunities for problems. We are happy for a rally to happen within the Tradathon, and the ad hoc challenge instigated by Snort was very effective, and we hope that a similar challenge (as what seems to be happening above) manifests. If there is enough demand for an official Tradathon rally we may be persuaded to change our current stance.

Earlier in the thread there was a little confusion regarding who is organizing the event, and I thought I would clarify this: Ram Mountaineering is principal organizers, but being based in Cape Town we will be asking locals for help, and part of that help were discussions on where to camp and when. No doubt we will continue to ask for the help of people closer to the kloofs. Clearly if anyone else wants to organize a "Tradathon" of sorts they are most welcome, our only request is not that weekend.

It would be great to have a guide book launched for the event :thumleft:

Haha, oops. Thanks for explaining Warren, I guess I should have attended the Cape Town Tradathon  I also thought making a comp could be a bad and dangerous idea. I'll do my part and team up with a magalies virgin, or at least a foreigner and take them up some fun routes.
