Hi,

We visited the Oudtshoorn crags very briefly for the 1st time this weekend -very cool! :)

But we were caught off guard when someone came out from the De Hoek entrance (we weren't staying there) and to tell us we had to pay a R20 fee to climb. No problem with paying, just confusing because the wiki &pdf guide don't say anything about it and the the combo cape-nature-de hoek sign left us wondering why our wild card didn't count too....?

Not being too lazy to update the wiki, just think someone who knows more than me should do it?

Still very cool to just see that huge main wall! :)

I remember reading something like that somewhere, in the guide book I think. De Hoek owns the crag

Hi Jane,

Correct, you need to pay R20 to climb at the crag. There used to be a sign at the start of the walk-in mentioning the fee to climb there.

Question to someone who knows: If you are staying at De Hoek, do you still need to buy a permit to climb?
If someone can let me know I'll update the Oudtshoorn Wiki.

De Hoek owns all the normally-climbed-at crags. If you're staying at de Hoek climbing is included.

Lets not ask & stimulate answers that we don't like.

yeah we have always paid first for Oudtshoorn climbing.

Another question...I heard somewhere that we should pay a yearly activity fee to climb around CT...does anyone know, where do I pay this and how much is it?

SANParks have a thing called an Activity Card which is like a Wild Card but somewhat cheaper and doesn't work in Cape Nature areas. If you buy one for climbing (as opposed to dog walking/horse riding/MTB) it'll give you free access to the climbing at areas where fees are charged (Silvermine). As far as I know (the website is not 100% clear on this) if you have a Wild Card then you don't need an activity card.

However, am i right in saying that if you have an activity card you don't get the same discount for the Cable Car as if you have a Wild Card? this is a major saving to loose out on

Unfortunately, the last time I was bouldering at topside, I was informed by a ranger that this is not the case. Apparently you need to have an activity card even if you have a wild card.
