Rubbish! Kloof Gorge (please don't lets get started on that name again) has great climbing. Kloof is a long way from Ballito.

If you have a trad rack i would strongly encourage you to simply head inland, as that side of 1000 hills has piles of rock waiting to be climbed.

if you aren't willing to drive that far your nearest climbing is The Rock, in Gateway, which might qualify as the best under utilized climbing facility in the country

Geez Warren! Did I hit a nerve or something?

Just helping to promote the newest climbing gym in KZN, I agree that The Rock is closer but you will certainly be climbing by yourself at that facility.

umgeni bouldering is in Howick...which is about an hour drive from Kloof...

once you are in umgeni nature reserve you need to drive about 6km on dirt road, its pretty tame but it slows you down...you eventually get to a parking lot where you have two options...

a) park at the top and walk down

b) or drive down...do-able in a non-4X4, but its easier in a 4X4

once you get to the bottom, you head in the direction of the Cycad camp...its about a 10 - 20 min walk to the nearest area...cant really remember

there are about 3 main sectors, problem being that it is probably overgrown and makes finding the problems quite hard...second big issue is the place has millions of pepper ticks...

otherwise the climbing is pretty good...not amazing but good, me and my friend are likely going to go do some bouldering there in the holiday, i dont mind showing you the area

The sport climbing at Umgeni is fantastic, rather head to the crags than try to find the boulders....
Howick Falls is also an experience, with some great climbing. If you don't have a climbing partner or sport gear, let me know.

Awesome shot for the info guys. Yeah pepper ticks, heard about those little buggers. Saw my buddy Nick Telfords legs after a stint that side. they looked like he had a million flea bites.

Rad i'll give you guys a shout december time shortly before i head that way.

Greg! Glad to hear that you'll be heading to our neighbourhood(ish) soon. Warren is correct in saying that the Rock in Gateway is the closest to you. It is quite rad but Nigel is correct in commenting that you will be the only actual climber there though. It is set up to cater more for the kiddies and tourists.
If you don't mind the drive, then it will be cool if you pop in to Southern Rock and I can show off the gym I helped build. Otherwise, you have me on facebook. Contact me if we get a spot of dry weather and perhaps we can do some climbing in Kloof or even venture to Umgeni. See you then oke.
