Nick Turner and Schalk Joubert
Picnic concert at Rainbow Glen, Montagu, Sunday 11 November 2012
Accomplished singer/songwriter/guitarist Nick Turner and bassist extraordinaire Schalk Joubert, both members of the infamous Sons of Trout which toured SA many times during the 1990's, will be performing at Rainbow Glen's first Picnic Concert of the summer season on Sunday 11 November at 16h00.
Nick later went on to form Mikanic with violinist Mike Rennie, and they spent 5 years performing in the USA before returning to home soil in 2009. His music effortlessly spans genres, with influences ranging from rock, reggae and African to hip-hop, ghoema and jazz. Lyrically powerful, relevant, humorous and energetic, his music has a wide appeal, with funky grooves and catchy tunes. He has recently appeared at various festivals collaborating with the likes of ZolaniMahola (Freshly Ground), Karen Zoid and Louis Mhlanga.
Schalk is one of our most sought-after bass players in RSA and also works as a solo artist, producer and composer. He received two Sama nominations for his debut album Kayamandi, and has just returned from the 7th Borneo International Jazz Festival where his band (comprising memebers from SA, Sweden, Norway and the USA) was the headline act. Prior to that he was on a world tour in a duo with USA artist Michelle Shocked, not to mention his regular work with local legends such as David Kramer, Valiant Swart, BreytenBreytenbach, etc.
Nick & Schalk will be joined for part of the program by local trombonist Jannie 'Hanepoot' van Tonder.
The concert starts at 16h00, bring your own picnic and drinks and come and enjoy the family friendly atmosphere at the beautiful Rainbow Glen -- you're welcome to cool off in the pool.
Tickets are R100, children under 16 free.
