Climbing gym in sandton?

Postby BrendonSalzer » Wed Jul 11, 2012 3:48 pm

Is it just me or does this seem like start of the next "Hype" exercise trend. Like MMA Fighting, haha.

Only opening Mid-August... I emailed the address on the site but didn't get a very helpful reply.

Does anyone know who is running it?
I hate this real world place... I'd be more than happy to live out there rather...

I had a look at the website, funny stuff :)

"Rock climbers that climb outdoors usually can’t climb if it’s raining, lightning, snowing, too hot, too cold etc. Yet if you opt for an indoor climbing gym you’ll be able to climb no matter what the weather outside may be."

And many more great one-liners!

Have a look under trainers, it seems that the two trainers are brothers, so I conveniently assumed they are running the show.

Google a bit, the "Sender" brothers are "real" people. I don't know them, but those aren't fake names. Stock photos and all.

haha

When you head out on an outdoor rock climbing trip you’re not as likely to meet many new people, yet when you visit an indoor climbing gym you’ll be surrounded by many new faces.

Interesting marketing strategy - unite people against "outdoor rock climbing" to build support for your gym. Weird :?

Ok then never mind their marketing approach, what about practice: you work in Sandton and don't want to fight traffic and would rather climb? I think a place like this will do well

I agree with Warren. Its this model that made climbing big in Europe.
I wish them good luck. Hopefully we have more cometitive climbers in the near future!

Hi Guys

Thank you for the large interest in the gym. We are in the middle of construction. Our aim is to promote the awareness of climbing in South Africa. Our intentions are not to stop people from climbing outdoors but rather to develop ones skills to enjoy all facets of climbing.
Our aim is also to enhance fitness and well being as our services include Kettlebells and Cross Training.
We look forward to the support from the climbing community and keep an eye out for updates on the gym!

I for one am a big outdoor climbing enthusiast. The thought of a new indoor gym is a fantastic idea. What better way to create awareness for our fantastic adrenilin sport than to have a place where beginners can go and learn safely without getting hurt and Sandton is a great convenient location, not to mention much closer than than others out there. I personally now have a conveinnant place where i can train and increase my climbing skills for when I am ready to hit that one piece of rock that has always managed to defeat me.

I don't believe anyone can argue that there is no better way or place to climb like outdoors but I can't go after work when it's dark to climb at my fravourite spot. Furthermore I can always improve on my techniques and I am sure so can a lot of you.

I can not wait to try out this new place, it looks great and the concept sounds solid.

I really hope to see you there having a jol like you know you will

@RockFit

How tall or your walls?

Is it more of a bouldering type gym?

I don't see any very over hanging sections?

Thanks for the reply

I hope this includes educating them to the finer points of outdoor climbing "etiquette" - no littering, discrete toileting, no chipping, no wire brushing, etc etc.

I went in there last week, think it opens today (monday) check out their website www.rockfit.co.za
Its not so much a climbing gym as a mini toproping centre, more for corporate groups than climbers I think, go see for yourself.

Hi all, RockFit gym is officially open.
As the name suggests, this is a fitness gym not a dedicated climbing centre but having said that, I think the guys have put together a great alternative in a central postition. The routes are approx 5-6 metres with varying grades and also has a short lead climb wall.

Yes we are open. Our facility is not a mini top or lead climb facility. We have over 22 top rops, bouldering cave as well as some lead climbing. Our shortest wall is 6 meters with varying from beginner to advanced options. Yes we do cater for corporates but that is not the main aim of our facility.
All the support is much appreciated! Please come and visit and have a great time with us!
