Bouldering - St Helena Bay

Postby Thermophage » Wed Oct 24, 2012 1:25 pm

Hey all.
I drove out up the W coast a few weeks ago and we were in the St Helena Bay, Paternoster, Titties bay area and the one thing I noticed was the incredible amount of boulders in the area.
OK...yes, they are granite.

But has anyone even been out there to explore around a little?
Super easy access just off of the road mostly.

If not, is anyone keen to make a day mission out there sometime to check things out.

Similarly...Driving up to Springbok as soon as you hit Clawer you start getting into good boulder and climbing territory with a mixture of granite and metasediments (and this basically continues up to Springbok, after which it gets FLAT and then as you head down into the Orange river at Vioolsdrif you start getting good rock again). Any ideas what is up there? Presumably trad

Cheers,
Cuan

I noticed loads of good sized boulders on the road from Rocklands up to Springbok too, as well as some nice looking buttresses and some slabby domes. No really obvious concentrations though and, by the look of it, no access other than on foot (or camel  ). You could do a lot of wandering and come up with very little for your efforts, or you could find Eldorado. Also land ownership might be an issue.

Looking to find out if anyone else is going to be there and also looking for climbing partners.

I spent many hours in the greater Langebaan area looking for something to climb on - without luck.
But don't let it stop you, I may have been looking with different expectations.
Good luck

Shot Gavin,

I really don't get out there much, but may be worth going with a few people sometime.

I grew up in Vredenburg and know the area and farmers quite well. Unfortunately only started climbing after I moved away. There is a redundant old granite quarry outside of Langebaan, well hidden away, that nobody owns or uses. You not really allowed in there, hehe, but there is some awesome bouldering in there with some potential trad lines and obvious sport potential.
Vredenburg has a huge granite dome with many boulders around for development. Been threatening to start something for years, but dont go out there often enough to visit the fam....
St. Helena and Paternoster have a few farms with rock outcrops, just need to get in touch with the farmers....and explain to them what rock climbing is.
Then offcourse you have Elands Bay with already existing routes.

Sweet man, I think I saw a granite quarry just outside St Helena bay as well, and there are a serious number of boulders around there!!!
Should make a mission up for a day to go check them out sometime....
More eyes = more potential to find a line or something.
