Ebert please read this in a friendly tone as that is the way I intend it.

You see climbing as a place where you climb to push grades and challenge yourself on moves.

Some of us enjoy other aspects of climbing. Like having to hike for an entire day, through chew your ass off vegetation just to get to a cliff that you saw on google earth. No one has ever climbed there (or so we assume). Ruck sack full of sleeping gear, eating gear, water, and way too much climbing gear as you don't know what you going to be up against once you reach your destination. Build a bomb proof natural anchor and top rope the crap out off a blank unclimbed wall of who the hell knows what grading. 12? 20? 29?

If you prefer to have a 10min walk in with a rucksack containing a rope, few draws tea and scones and a 29 as your goal, I'm happy for you. But don't make your self out to be freakin Chuck Norris. For some, grading has absolutely nothing to do with climbing other than letting you know the difficulty of a route and what to expect.

Please understand that this post is meant to be taken up in good spirit.

Now that you've changed your real name, I see that I was misled in my previous post. "Chop" still comes screaming out of all of your posts, and I can't blame it on trolling any more.... pity.

Agree with frank, great post.

There are so many facets to climbing.

And the "rules" are only a guide line to your climbing life.

You set the goals, you monitor your growth.

shame man Ebert, one day you will look back at this all and realise what a cock you were !
We all do when we eventually grow up.
Don't stress, contradicting yourself 100 times in one thread is part of that process.
Good luck my son

to frank and CO this message was brought to you for the following reason and clearly you dont see why im arguing the point so ill enlighten you:

i dont mean to be rude but you didnt learn to answer questions in school or it was too long ago so let me explain my viewpoint on why i think you guys are being unrealistic and WRONG.

please read the 1st message again which states, DO YOU IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS WHEN YOU WORK ROUTES?

this question clearly states IMPROVE YOUR CLIMBING when WORKING ROUTES? You cant comment on improving your climbing if you havent bothered IMPROVING YOUR CLIMBING, its like telling someone you have experience at something but youve never tried it, it annoys me profusely when the guys that have been climbing for longer than im alive think they know better but yet they still climbing 20s AND THEN COMMENT ON IMPROVING CLIMBING.

SEE WHAT I DID THERE?

if you still dont get my point, then see me as an arrogant fool that doesnt know anything. Enjoy climbing 18s 19s and 20s, i have no problem with that as i love climbing and climbing is climbing, BUT DONT COMMENT ON topics you dont know anything about.

To the people that are climbing harder than the usual forum commenters, this message is not focused on you, its focused on the usuals.

im devoting my life to improving my climbing ability, i dont just change topics to suit my comfort zone

I, like most of the guys on the forum dont clim 30's, not by a lack of trying, but because I simply dont have the skill.. I'm sure I can quit my job and train my ass of for a year and who knows, but unfortunately most people live in the real world, and I am absolutely fine with that...

Ebert, lucky for you, you are obviously a very talanted climber, who have the drive to climb high grades, but that does not make you as cool as Riaan Cruywagen!

The thread was about working routes and improving your climbing... That changed the moment you told everyone that you are freakin awesome!

Get it now! I suppose not.. take this however you want to

Ebert, I'm barely a weekend warrior and everyone knows that -I did not comment on the question, I merely asked you a simple question and you were a complete dick about it.

God, one can only hope your writing, grammar and spelling will catch up to your climbing skills one day.

I was not trying to fight you, I wanted to clarify something with you.

And all everyone sees is that you made a complete ass of yourself.

Strange how, despite the promises, you're apparently unable to stop proving your intelligence.

Do you improve your climbing skills through working routes???

Yes, no one is argueing that.

The question that is being raised is, if your red-point abillity is an accurate measure of your climbing skill.

Each person will have their own opinion on this.

I feel that you can be a hard climber but still not be a "good" climber

Can you compare a trad/alpine climber with 25 years experiance, with a 20 odd year old, who just started boldering?

The measure of difficulty in each genre is very differant and so i feel not.

Any way I've climbed what i feel to be hard routes (sport) only to read some guy on 8A calling it soft....very soft.

So i say again we all hold our selves to our own personal standard

Funniest thing I've read in a long time. Sadly the rest of this thread has gone out the window.
