Hi fellow climbers,

Any one up for guiding a Swede to the climbing in the area of JHB?

I'm traveling to JHB in the begining of January for work, I'll arrive on the 3rd and leave on the 11th. I will mostly work but I hope to get some time for climbing, I do sport climbing and bouldering. Most likely I'll get time for climbing during the weekend, 5th - 6th or during evenings. Any grades up to Fb 8A/8b.

I will stay at the Sunsquare Montecasino Hotel - is there any indoor climbing gym near by?

Hope to make some new friends,

Best regards,

Olof

Hi Olof

you have Wonder Wall not to far from there with is a great climbing gym, loads of climbs and a boulder cave.

You must just check up with them if they are open over the festive seasons.

If you dont want to travel to far you will find towards the west of JHB STRUBENS 1, a neat rock face not very high but it has some good climbs to it to stay in the climbing frame.

You can find photo's and directions to this wall on the forum.

You are welcome to send me a PM so i can help you. I will be honest i am not on your level of clibing but i will be more than happy to belay and watch, you learn alot from watcing.

David

I'd be happy to help you out... We have a few areas near Johannesburg with amazing climbing up to 8b+. There are a few 5 star lines from 8a-8b that I would be happy to show you. I'll add it to my diary for the weekend of 5 and 6 January. You can take a look at some pictures of Wigwam and Chosspile in the Gallery section of this website. The lines at these venues tend to be 15m long and powerful...The routes are also in the Wiki section.

Another possibility is Waterval Boven. It is 3 hours outside of JHB and has amazing climbing, the best in the country by far. There are plenty of 8a-8b line there up to 35m long! It is a truly world-class venue that you could spend months climbing at and not be bored!

Looking forward to meeting you.

If you're looking for mid-week training, Monte Casino is only a few blocks away from the South African Climbing Academy at St Peter's School. It's one of the better bouldering venues in JHB. Don't bother with Strubens or with Wonderwall. You'll be very disappointed. When you arrive give me a call. 072 823 2832.

My friend Andrew should also be available then. He has put up most of the 8a-8b lines in the Gauteng area and the hardest lines in Waterval Boven. We will be psyched to meet you.

Sounds awesome!

I really hope to get some time off from work, the Wigwam and Chosspile sounds like areas for me, I'm more of a 15 m power guy than 35 m of endurance. In the area of Stockholm where I live the routes tend to be around that height.

Now this business trip changed into excitement :o

I'll keep you guys posted and I'm looking forward to meet you!

I don't wana leach but I'll only bring harness/shoes and chalk, ok?

Regards,

Olof

Hi Olof

As Brian said above we are a small bouldering wall but with lots of very steep walls with many hard problems set up to Font 8A. We are literally 2 to 3km from your hotel on the same road, (Witkoppen Road). However the days you free get out with Andrew and Brian, this would be much better.

(Thanks for the punt Brian)
