how to clean a climbing rope

Postby TipToe » Wed Oct 03, 2012 4:55 pm

I was about to post this question on the forum, but decided to google it first. As a result I found the following website which answered some of my questions:

If there are any other useful websites, let me know.

I just soak my rope in a bath of lukewarm water, agitating it every few minutes. I repeat this step until the rope is well rinsed. And then to get most of the water out I hold a cloth around it and pull it through, this also gets a lot of the dirt out. Then I just hang it up to dry in a well ventilated area, out of the sun.

You could also use a rope brush https://www.mountainmailorder.co.za/ind ... ductId=230 It works well, but I found that it fluffed up my rope a bit.
And dont use any soaps or chemicals.

We've always used Nikwax Tech Wash to clean our ropes, it works really well. I probably shouldn't admit that we use it in a cold wash in our top-loader washing machine...

Hi Anna,
Check out these forum threads also:

FYI: I would only wash your rope if it is really necessary!!

Anyone have any idea on how often you can clean a rope?
I've cleaned mine only once.
Does it matter?

Loop it through itself in tiny loops...thrown in washing machine with a TINY amount of mild soap...take out, uncoil and leave to dry out of the sun...
You may want to give it an additional rinse cycle after the first wash.
You can do it by hand, but it is a serious pain...trust me :(

Nikwax tech wash with a rope brush is defiantly the way to go!
