We are heading to Hogsback early Jan, and I was wondering about the routes specifically in the Fame and Fashion area whether the bolts were still safe and whether trad gear is needed for these routes or if they are fully bolted? Routes 1 - 4 in the Fame and Fashion area look great!

Also was wondering if there is a route guide for the Madonna and Child area, if it is worth visiting?

Thanks a lot,
Crute.

Hi Craig

The are no known cases of bolt failour at Hogsback. The bolts are stainless steel & were placed about 2002. They should be perfectly safe. The latest guide is posted on http://eas.mcsa.org.za/Rock%20Climbing/Rock_List.htm . Unfortunatly Madonna and Child area is not included.

All the bolted routes on the Hog are fully bolted sport routes. I also recomend 7, 10, 12 & 13 really fun. No 8, of the next sector Diamonds on the Soles of Your Shoes...is a must!
