Rooiberg. Swazi Kings

Postby Ringalatus » Sun Jan 27, 2013 10:00 pm

We're going to Rooiberg next week and are wanting to climb Swazi Kings. it's graded 17 which is quite hard for us 'oldies'. Anyone tell us where the crux on the first pitch is or is it one whole crux. On the third pitch what's the 'bottomless' chimney like and can it be well protected. Any tips would be appreciated.

Last time we were there, amongst other climbs, we did Blunt Brothers which we cruised OK.

Hi,

The crux of Swazi Kings is actually on the 1st pitch approx 2/3rds the way up. It is well protected and could easily be aided. It is a hard 17 (some have suggested 18) - tell us what you think after you climb it.

Pitch 3's bottomless chimney is a relief to get into, it's the mantle shelf move onto a small ledge at the base of the chimney that is the tricky bit. I don't remember the chimney being difficult to protect at all.

Enjoy!

Dave and Ray thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know how it goes. We have Pyramid, Paramour and Pre-nup on the hit list as well. Think the others might be too hard for us.

Skip Pyramid, unless you like a bundu bash of a scramble (through thorns) on the middle "D" pitch. Climb Knights that say "Ni" too, it is excellent, sadly only one pitch.
Happy climbing

The bush on pitch 3 isn't THAT bad.

Maybe not since my friend and I had our epic battle with it, we may have reduced it somewhat...
