Rescue Backpack and bakkie stolen

Postby Nic Le Maitre » Wed May 15, 2013 8:29 pm

Hi All

My white toyota hilux double cab, CL10219, with a grey framed aluminium treadplate canopy, was stolen in Stellenbosch today, the tracker placed in Wynberg last so if you see it, please call the Wynberg SAPS on 021 799 1300. Also in the bakkie was my MCSA rescue back pack, bright red and yellow Backpacker with MCSA logos on it. In the pack was a green and grey Mountain Hardware shell, First Ascent rain pants, my red BD Momentum harness with a Gri-gri 1, Petzl Spelegyca lanyard with Magentron Biners, a 30m and a 10m cordellette, 2 120cm High Angle slings all marked with yellow and green striped insulation tape. My (very dirty and battered) white Petzl Ecrin Roc was also in the bag, it has SAR and M72 on it in reflective lettering and my contact details inside. If anyone sees any of this stuff please let me know. Oh and a reel of 200m of 11mm yellow Beal Access static that belongs to Mountain Rescue.

Regards
Nic
Happy climbing

I know the whole situation is mega fubar. But for some reason I feel especially bad for those Magnetrons. Have you even used them yet?

Very uncool!
That's a lot of gear gone missing.
Where exactly in Stellenbosch was it stolen from? So i know not to park there, i often have some gear lying around in my car.
I had my entire climbing kit stolen in 2005 and was left with a pair of training shoes.
Hope you get your gear and bakkie back.

Here: http://goo.gl/maps/0xM65, exactly where that grey Hilux is in the picture.

Would have been bleak if they had taken either the gear or the bakkie, but they took both which sucks even more.
Happy climbing

That's really harsh! What a blow! Surely they should have tracked it by now...

We tracked it as soon as Nic let me know it was stolen. But by then they already had 3 hours and got to the unit. Nic had one of our fleet management units in his bakkie as part of our testing. It's designed more for getting detailed data from trucks than recovering stolen vehicles so it's much easier to locate inside the bakkie than a SVR unit. Also works on GPS and cellphone, not the recovery frequencies.

From Stellenbosch they stopped here first : http://goo.gl/maps/BZi3y and then went here: http://goo.gl/maps/SbQCU (this is the last position we got from the unit). By the time the recovery team and cops got there the bakkie was gone. But apparently the cops said that the place in Wynberg is a known bakkie chop shop. So don't ask me why they don't just go and take those guys down?!?! The cops apparently took some guys for questioning but I don't think they waterboarded them like they should have.

Maybe a good idea to keep an eye on gumtree for ads of the stolen goods? seems like the guys are pro though so I doubt that they'll sell it openly. sorry for your loss dude :(
