Hi

A friend of mine has asked me to set him a "target" in the form of a spectacular classic climb.

He is not very experienced & so the idea is a moderate grade climb more in the lines of a peak of grand aesthetic appeal rather than a higher grade overhanging test piece.

So, oddly enough, I wondered what the esteemed readers of the forum think would be up to the task.

So far my thinking was around Drakensberg climbs, but my goal is basically an inoffensive safe line & though some berg climbs have reasonable grades few could say they were easily protected.

Any ideas?

Probably the best steep climb at an easy grade is Exposure in 5 major or easier still (esp the approach and descent) on a spectacular ridge is Smalblaar at Yellowwood. Both can be done in a day from CPT.

Klein Winterhoek frontal is a mission to get to......

All three mentioned are spectacular and classic. All three requires some grit as the walk ins and offs are notable. I would rate in order of increasing effort Smalblaar, Exposure then Klein Winterhoek frontal. Less intense, but still spectacular would be Slangolie or Eagles folley. Epic walk in, easy climbing, yet classic would be Neft's route on Towerkop.

Classic Climbs by Jeremy Sampson may also provide inspiration.
