To date only one person has ever soloed a route up Klein Winterhoek Amphitheatre (for good reason). That person is the best all round mountaineer to ever come out of South Africa. Following that oke (who lives near Cape Point) is an astounding climber who unquestionably took over the crown as SA's leading all round rock climber. He has climbed El Cap free, redpointed Mazawattee, onsighted Automatic for the People, done good hard Arctic new routes and will probably soon have SA's hardest trad route in the bag - one called Atomic Sky.

Clinton is now soloing Wall of Silence.

He hiked in on Friday and his sms said "Having the hardest day of my life". There was also other stuff including woman-stuff as happens when kakking off, as we all know. Klein Winterhoek presents the toughest hike in to the toughest wall in SA and Clint was carrying heavy.

Yesterday, (Saturday 16 March 2014), he got his ropes fixed up the the Ledge of Forgotten Dreams. These first four pitches which Wall of Silence shares with Oceans of Fear are no pushover even though they're the easiest on the wall. They're very tough for the grades (19, 20, 20, 19) and gear is sparse on the first two. Near the top of P1 if you slipped off you'd hit the ground. Doing this while leading out on a Silent Partner, not to mention being all alone in this daunting place, would be gnarly, way gnarly.

Yesterday evening Clint bedded down at the base of the wall. His last text said "been the hardest two days of my life".

Day 3 today, and Clint hasn't spent Sunday in bed. He has done some desperate aiding through the Zigzag pitch and the Black Mystery pitch. He has had supper and is now bedding down on the Ledge of Forgotten Dreams. Tomorrow he will hopefully get through those monster roofs which present about 100m of overhang climbing.

Clint isn't having woman-troubles. The opposite.

Not to take away from his effort but is that rope soloing then?

Talks about belaying off a silent partner (an auto belay) so safe to say yes. Pretty sure AdK did too.

update...

Yesterday Clint cracked through all the aid and fixed lines then retreated to the Ledge of Forgotten Dreams.

Today he managed to get up onto the headwall to where Wall of Silence intersects Oceans of Fear. So he's back on familiar ground, having done Oceans six times!

Clint did the big overhanging retreat down his fixed lines a couple of hours ago and is now settled if for the cold and lonely night at the Ledge again.

Tomorrow Clint faces massive overhanging jumarring to reach his high-point and then he hopes to blast to the top. He's hoping to summit by lunchtime.

Ant has been feeding him with current weather reports so he knows that rain is on its way tomorrow. He'll be well-anxious!

Yes, Clinton is rope soloing. Don't worry you haven't taken anything away from the effort - it's still very much impressive.

'Rope soloing' and 'soloing' in my opinion are not too far apart (with the one generally having a much lesser consequence if you come off). From a mental point of view you want to be very headstrong. I recall someone with very good credentials and experience (i.e. you wouldn't expect to hear this from them) sharing a story about rope soloing an Aid Route in Yosemite... after being on the route for a couple of days doing hard aid, he sat down, had a good cry, felt better and then got on with the route :cyclopsan
Physically it's also a lot more demanding.
Also your 'Silent' belay partner doesn't 'take in' slack no matter how much you beg ;) The manual also recommends a stopper knot every few meters!

If you want more info on the Silent Partner (type of device that Clinton is using to belay himself) see: http://www.bmi.gv.at/cms/BMI_Alpindiens ... artner.pdf

Lastly, when Clinton says something is hard, it usually is.

More like damn near impossible.
There's a good reason my cheat stick is called Clinton.

I would hazard a guess that rope soloing is much much harder the pure soloing due to the amount of gear that must be carried and that you must climb everything twice.
Pure soloing probably much harder mentally.

You've probably read Hilton's article 'Oceans of my Life' but you may not have seen Adam's comments and photos + one more from Jeremy.
