Abseil locations/destinations - Cape Town

Post by herschel » Tue Jul 04, 2017 1:42 pm

Hello Folks,

I have been lurking in the forum for a while now and this is my first post. I know I’m going to get some interesting comments so let’s hope my skin is thick enough to handle it all :P

Last year I did a abseil training course with Justin Lawson – which was simply awesome. Since then I’ve done the following abseils with the MCSA - Groothoek Kloof, Paarl Rock - Training MCSA, Haelkop Caves in Jonkershoek. I’ve done Silvermine and Paarl rock a few times privately with some friends.

Now I know abseiling is considered the most dangerous & boring part of climbing, and at the rate at which I acquired gear I might as well start climbing – :P

Anyway please can I have your suggestions for good locations to explore/abseil, ideally the locations should be away from the sport climbing lines. I really don’t want to get in the way of other climbers on the same wall.

Your suggestions will be appreciated,

Herschel

My suggestion if you like abseiling is to get into technical kloofing. There you do a lot of abseiling.

Chat to your local MCSA guys about that. :thumleft:

I have the following tick list with regards to kloofing with the MCSA,

- Tierkloof
- Volstruis Kloof
- Eikenhofkloof
- Kromrivierkloof

For now I'm interested in the immediate surrounding areas.

yoh, i know there's some robust debate here but its a pity that an observer would anticipate harsh comments. i hope common courtesy will always prevail here......
on to your question...... there are abseil anchors at a number of points on table mountain; they were bolted to accommodate 50m ropes (so abseils are shorter than 50m), although some of them can be linked to give longer descents. i suggest buying the Cape Peninsula Select trad guide by Tony Lourens to find their locations.
if you get trained in anchor building and get the necessary trad gear you can set-up your own abseil points. but make sure you know what your're doing. i can recommend this: https://www.mountainmailorder.co.za/adv ... 39886.html
if its your thing, why not join mountain rescue? good vibes, advanced training and putting your skills to good use :thumleft:
ps: and do start climbing!

By robust debate, you mean "flame wars" - (lost/found gear, Abseil points - your technique) - to name just a few  but for whats its worth the information shared here is extremely useful. Thanks for the suggestions, I will get the guide. With regards to mountain rescue, I'll look into that.
