BOGGLE abseil height?

Post by RyanKarate » Tue Feb 13, 2018 12:47 pm

Route guide for Cedarberg, Magaliesberg does not mention what the height of abseil is from last (3rd pitch) chains on top of boggle.

Iv heard people say I should be able to reach the ground on 2x50m ropes.

Thecrag.com had an edit on BOGGLES route changing the abseil length from 50m to 60m.

Anyone else done it on 50’s and lived? Thanks in advance.

I’ve abseiled from the chains at top of pitch 2 with 60m ropes and only just made it to the bottom. I somehow recall on a previous abseil many years ago having to downclimb the last few metres from a tree in the river bed where the rope had thankfully landed.

Correction. I meant to say from the top of pitch 3

I have a different recollection of 50m ropes just making it even now that the bottom tree is broken. I've done that rap recently with 60's and they generally land in the river (i.e. plenty extra). To be fair though I never verified the rope manufacturer's lengths. Before you commit you should be able to eyeball if the ropes bottom out. If they don't then rather rap down the Boggle crack placing a few pieces to keep you in, to the chains at the second stance. Your second can remove the kit. Your ropes will easily get you down from there. Take prussiks.

Ryan, I added the description for Boggle on TheCrag.com. I also heard somewhere you can get down with 50m ropes which is why the description said 50m initially. I can't remember where I heard 50m and I noticed the route is 61m long if you add all the pitches so I had some doubt about the 50m and changed it to 60m to be safe. We abseiled off Boggle using 60m ropes and there was plenty of rope on the ground , so it is definitely less than 60m. If the individual pitch lengths are accurate, the total length of the abseil will be less than 61m (because it is straight down) so it is possible that 50m ropes with some stretch can get you down.

Ryan, we're taking the 60m ropes, they're dry so it's ok if they get wet!!!

And don't listen to Hector, he climbs in flip flops!!!!

I'm with Hector on this one (for a rare change). I recall getting down from the chains on 50's with rope stretch (maybe with some tree for the last metre or two?)

The route itself isn't direct. The abseil is definitely shorter than the sum of the pitches.

But practice prussicking in the garage before heading down on 50's. And tell us how the experiment goes :hapban

We used to get down with 50's in the ole days and then climb down the tree. Question is what the tree is like now. If you are concerned you can tie off the ropes eccentrically for the first person down and add 5m or so to one of the ropes. Once the person is in the tree and kinda stable there, equalize the ropes to see if OK. If not then the next person will have to make another plan to get down.

I've done it on 50s, but it was on generous mammut 50s (they tend to give you a bit extra). Also I probably weigh more than you. If you have 60s, I think rather take them, it's one hell of a jug back up if you don't reach the ground.

We got rained on a few times and ran out of time to be able to finish the route. Abseiled off 2nd pitch bolts.
