Klein Winterhoek - Gear needed?

Post by thinus123 » Wed Nov 28, 2018 8:17 am

Hi, as part of my 2019 plan I'd like to do the Klein Winterhoek frontal route.
We are a few novice climbers that live around the Swartland and this is a classic on our doorstep.
Now we need a list of suggested gear, we have a bunch of gear, but not sure what the requirements are.
The plan is to get someone to guide us/one of us/few of us the first time and then give it a bash on our own later on.
Thanks.

Hi there

2 half ropes.

1 set of nuts, a set of cams, 0.4-3, maybe a few doubles (0.5,0.75,1).

Alpine draws if you have them (otherwise quickdraws but take more slings) and 4-5 120cm slings.

I'd not bother with cordelettes unless only one of you leads.

The pitches are long and so rope drag is a problem that the old guys avoided by not placing gear. I'm not that hardcore and much more scared so I place more gear and then need more slings to avoid the drag.

Can't help you out with the "new" walk in. When I climbed it last, my partner knew the farmer on the "old" access and he let us use that.
Happy climbing
Nic

Standard Rack and two half ropes required.
The "new" walk in involves bundu bashing, to reach the "old" trail.
Best if you reach out to the farmer at Visaasbos.
Not really a climb for the "novice" unless you have someone in the party who knows the way.
Maybe prepare yourself by doing Slangolie, Smalblaar etc first
You may still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not. Cat Stevens

Do Scimitar Ridge in Jonkershoek. Climbed it for the first time the other day. Simply amazing. No hassle walk in, easy descent. The climb took 5.5-6h (we simul climbed and linked a lot of the shorter pitches, the RD says around 8h)
