Found: climbing helmet on Stellenbosch Mountain

Did you forget you favourite boots at the crag? Or, did you find some quickdraw on the 4th bolt of some route?

Found: climbing helmet on Stellenbosch Mountain

Post by Boondock » Tue Jan 29, 2019 12:38 pm

Last Saturday a friend and I decided to explore the rock climbing potential on the south side of Stellenbosch Mountain. We headed to the mini-buttress just left of the hiking path that starts in Paradyskloof and goes to the saddle east of the summit (i.e. not the route from Coetzenburg). At the base of the more vertical stuff where we roped up, I was very surprised to find a white Petzl climbing helmet! I really didn't think anyone had been there before. The helmet is still in a relatively good condition so can't have been there too long. Contact me if it's yours.

FYI, we climbed two 30m pitches until we were able to traverse out right. The grade was about 12-14, generally bushy and dirty but not too loose. But nothing amazing really - bottom line is I don't know if I'd repeat it.

Hello,

Interessant wat jy gedeel het rakende die klim op Stellenboschberg. Hoe lank was die "walk-in" omtrent vanaf Paradyskloof?

Dankie.

Boondock, you found my Helmet. Thanks so much. It says ''safety first'' on a green sticker at the back? Will PM you.

I went looking for it but could not find it? Was it at the large cairn we built?

Great to know more people are exploring the area. I know Johann Lanz also considered exploring the arete to the left in search of some better routes that Farrell and I could probably handle. Johann, did you find any?

Farrell Davids and I explored the area in April 2017 and opened a three pitch route up that buttress. We called it Salty Crack because Farell was busy eating salty cracks  We considered it a grade 14 . There is a huge boulder to sling for tat after the first pitch (which we did the first time and then removed it) and again on the second (still there). Its not the greatest route but has quite a few interesting sections.

Groete

Jaco

Ps. The second time we went to complete the route (and when I lost the Helmet), was on the 4th of March 2018.
