Mazawattee (35/8c+) goes down!

27/07/2009: South Africa
Having been invited as a guest on the Petzl Rock and Road trip Adam and his father Miroslav went to the Eastern Cape to climb and check out the local scene.

After the competition, Adam and everyone came to Montagu in the Western Cape.

Adam climbed a longstanding project bolted in the late 90's by Sean Maasch. The projects name being Mazawattee.

Today was certainly exciting with all the Montagu climbers out along with a few guys from Gauteng and KZN.

It was amazing to watch Adam do this route!
He started up, checking out most of the moves and pulling on draws when necessary whilst cleaning holds. Once at the top he inspected the route again while be lowered down. After a good rest, he sent it on his first redpoint attempt.

He did grunt a bit going through the cruxy top section (apparently this is only the 2nd time he has really grunted on his trip here :D
His opinion on the grade was that the route is 35/8c+

The only bitter/sweet thing about the route being opened today is that a South African never got the ascent. Matt Bush (ironically on a Europe climbing trip at the moment) was extremely close to getting the route.

That said Matt commented about Adam sending the route "Sharing in successess of others adds to the positive vibration of energy. Success breeds more success. I feel this is the start of great routes to come."
(and there are still plenty of projects lurking around Montagu)

Adam was keen to retain the routes original name - Mazawattee is open and SA has a new hardest route!
(Adam also sent Two To Win (aka Streetfight) at Oudtshoorn on his 2nd attempt, confirming that it is grade 34/8c)

Sean Maasch was apparently 'quite revved' to hear that Adam sent the route.

Adam Ondra visited Montagu on Monday the 27th of July 2009. Adam sent the route on his first redpoint attempt (he'd been on once to place draws & check out the route).

Was a pleasure having you in Montagu Adam, rip it up in Rocklands!
