Paul Brouard sends Mazawattee (35/8c+)

Paul Brouard sent Mazawattee (35/8c+) last Saturday during the Montagu Rock Rally

Paul Brouard sent Mazawattee last Saturday during the Montagu Rock Rally. Paul is the 2nd South African to climb this route after Arjan De Kock sent it last year – Adam Ondra got the First Ascent on his visit to SA.

Mazawatte is South Africa’s hardest Sport climb located at Jurassic Park in Montagu… The route was bolted by Sean Maasch in the 90′s and stood for years as a project.

Paul sent Streetfighter (34) (aka Two to Win) at Oudtshoorn in 2009 and has been pulling down at Waterval  Boven recently and sent Rodan 8c/34

Paul spent 10 days last year working the route and just 3 days on before sending the route.

Paul says the send was a bit anti climatic for him, he’s been training for it whilst overseas and when it went down ‘so easily’ he was a bit surprised and is not quite sure where to go from here.

So what will Paul do next???  Right now he is chilling with his family and girlfriend.  They are making plans to find jobs in Sinagopore or Malaysia.  Singapore doesn’t have much outdoor climbing but the indoor scene is vibrant and day trips to Malaysia would be on the cards – Malaysia has great climbing but the weather is hot and humid.

Paul also says that Arjan helped out a lot with beta for the route.  With any luck we’ll see both(!?) Paul and Arjan representing SA in the World Climbing Champs!!

Paul could be top 10 in the world. I am absolutely sure. He is 9a+ talent and no one even knows it. Paul, pleeese open Digital Warfare : ) it is probably one of best climbs in the world; 6 star and I reckon you would do it in under 4 days.

Not trying to be antagonistic, but just for the sake of context, what percentage of your household bills does your boyfriend pay? Because even living frugally, $600 a months for bills seems extremely low, especially considering that you live outside a major US city.

That’s kind of you Andrew! But I think you inflating my talent (and my head!) would love to give it a bash though! Anyone free to head out there next week?! Else I’m psyched for the new hard routes in Malaysia. Google Malaysia mammut trip.. Looks rad..

And thanks for the kudos guys! It’s a super climb and within the ability of bunch of other sa climbers! If that’s what gets you psyched then go forth and conquer! : )

Nice work fella.

At the risk of sounding seriously homoerotic, Harris and I once “fantasized” about creating the top SA climber and our ultimate combo was Clinton’s heave-ho and Paul’s ability.
