In 2013, Reini Fichtinger, Zlu Haller, Killian Fischhuber, Anna Stöhr & co. spent 3 weeks developing the bouldering at Bushman’s Cave in Rocklands.  They developed about 75 problems (25 on the right and 50 on the left side of the road).  Zlu Haller has said, “I can honestly say that some of them definitely belong to the best I’ve ever climbed.”

The bouldering is all easily accessible within a 5 to 10 minutes walk from the parking. All problems in the Taj Mahal area are located to the right of the main road – Taj Mahal (V9) is probably under the Top 3 in routes in Rocklands in this grade.  There are also tons of problems just 5 minutes to the left of the main road.

Bushman’s Cave Amphitheatre was founded in 2002 by Erik & Melinda Milander on their farm about 35 km outside Clanwilliam.  Several of the country’s top artists have performed at this beautiful open air theatre.  Bushman’s Cave also offers the option of self catering cottages or camping with full ablution facilities, electricity, and a swimming pool.

This place is really amazing. I highly recommend it for people keen to do classic rocklands first ascents. The ideal location for a person of the cape to come test their skills against the unknown. Erik really has a large piece of unexplored land that will most likely be the next destination for many. Above everything else, he has toilet paper in his bathrooms, pool table, tv, wifi, signal, a bar and a large under roof area perfect for rainy days/socializing.

Interested in rock art? walk among these boulders and have your mind blown!!!

thanks for amazing food and an awesome day of climbing provided by this awesome guy!

sincerely

Erik owns over 400 hectares of that mountain. The potential is huge as even close to existing roads and trails there are amazing boulders that nobody has even chalked up. The area will benefit a lot from additional traffic and development; the landowners support the development and will put in trails and roads to the boulders if we give them GPS coordinates.

If you’re staying at his place you can also collect free wood from the riverbed next to the campsite. Need an axe or a saw but… free wood!

I stayed there for a while this season in one of the chalets. Electricity, hot showers and cell signal make the place more comfortable than De Pakhuys for an extended stay.

No. Permits are not required for the Bushmans Cave area for 2014.
