CityROCK is coming to Johannesburg!

Jozi to finally to get a world-class indoor climbing facility.

CityROCK is coming to Johannesburg.

December 15, 2014 –CityROCK has started construction on a world-class indoor climbing facility in Fontainebleau, Randburg. The construction will take approximately nine months and the new gym will open in August 2015.

The facility is centrally located on Republic Road in Randburg, 10 km from Sandton City, and 4 km from Cresta Shopping Centre.

About the Climbing Gym:
– Roped climbing up to 16 m high.
– 1,700 m2 of high climbing walls, with approximately 100 top ropes.
– 1,000 m2 of bouldering.
– 28,000 grips.
– A dedicated kids climbing area, for birthday parties and kids programs.

Robert Breyer, CityROCK partner and the project manager, says: “This gym has been years in the making. I have been looking for a suitable location for a climbing gym in Johannesburg for almost a decade. Two years ago I finally found the right building –the old Randburg Action Cricket Arena in Randburg. It’s perfect because of its location and meeting all the other requirements for a world-class facility: height, parking, zoning and affordable. I am proud that we have finally started construction on the new gym.”

About the Johannesburg CityROCK Gear Shop:
Trish Gaertner, retail manager for CityROCK says: “Climbing gear can be really hard to find in Jozi. The chain stores just don’t really stock any of the great clothing brands or products available internationally. My goal is to be the largest and best-stocked climbing, mountaineering and hiking speciality retail shop in South Africa. Previously our Cape Town store claimed this, but Johannesburg will be almost twice the size – 300 m2 of great retail.

We will stock all the usual stuff, but in addition, we will be proud to stock brands that are not available, or in very limited Johannesburg: prAna, Mountain HardWear, Metolius, The North Face.

CityROCK Yoga:
The new gym will include a great Yoga Studio, over 100m2 in size. Yoga and climbing go really well together from a sport as well as a cultural perspective. We also see a lot of people doing just Yoga with us.

Training Area:
The new gym will include a 150m2 serious training area. This area will cater to experienced climbers that can use the free weights, campus and system training boards and hang boards to build strength in order to climb harder grades.

Safe Parking:
The Randburg lot has 100 dedicated and secure off-street parking bays.

Creating Employment:
The new gym will ultimately create new employment for approximately 30 full-time and part-time people.

About CityROCK:
CityROCK started in Cape Town 13 years ago, and has been going from strength to strength. The business incorporates a Yoga Studio, as well as South Africa’s leading Gear Shop. CityROCK also has an online presence called Mountain Mail Order to sell gear to climbers and mountaineers all over Southern Africa. CityROCK is owned by three avid climbers in Cape Town: Charles Edelstein, Robert Breyer and Trish Gaertner.

About Indoor Climbing:
Indoor climbing is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. There are currently over 200 indoor climbing gyms in the USA. During just the last year, 28 new ones opened.

Indoor climbing combines exercise, mental problem solving and fun. It is a lot more entertaining than sitting on a treadmill and staring at a wall, swimming pool and waiting for the time to pass. Our customers include the very young (age 5 and above) and not-so-young, experienced and novices alike.

About Johannesburg:
Johannesburg, despite its title of being a world-class African City, which ranks consistently in the top 30 cities in the business world, doesn’t yet have a decent climbing gym. This is about to change.

Wow. Fantastic. I see some pretty hot specials on the cards at the other gym! Congratulations gentlemen. You certainly have lots of guts to venture where decades of Gautengers feared to tread.

This is absolutely fantastic for Joburg and south African climbing – it will have a huge positive impact on the development of the sport and emergence of new talent. The existing strong folk are going to get burnt off within months. Hats off to Robert, it takes a lot courage and passion to do this. Andrew

Awesome! But the question is price. Will pricing be similar to CT and will membership be valid at both facilities?

Like everything else, you get what you pay for, and looking at the plan, the huge costs that must be involved, and the fact that this is a very specialised market, I think it highly unlikely that it will be cheap. But, if we want a top-notch facility, we’ll just have to suck it up and climb on. When I think of what I spend money on every month, I’m happy to forego some indulgences to make way for this.
