Interview with Lions Head Mugging Victim

John Maytham interviews one of the people who were mugged on Lions Head last weekend & the SA Ambassador to Ireland (who’s son was mugged).

10 tourists including my son and girlfriend was held at knife point while climbing Lions head. Everything stolen, passports etc including car keys.

Took 20 min to get through to police by them and another 40 min and 10 calls by me. We needed amongst others a van to get there to stop them from stealing the cars. 10111 rang out repeatedly. (God forbid you ever have a real crisis!!) The police man actually asked me where table mountain was!!!

No one came!!! The poor tourists are so traumatised, one has just been in the country for an hour. (I’m with them now at Roeland station. Police shockingly incompetent).

Also phoned metro police who asked my son: “what do you want me to do for you?”

Ranger at bottom also did nothing!

    Incredible !!!!

  2. Kyle Meenehehan Jul 21, 2015 at 3:04 pm #

I’ve phoned 10111 and gotten the answering machine while someone was chasing me with a knife. Police in this country are completely useless.

    Run by f****g apes !

  5. Adrian Tregoning Jul 21, 2015 at 5:40 pm #

Wow… Crazy this incompetence. It is demotivating to watch this countries services continue on their downward spiral.

Apes would do a better job

Table Mountain needs to stripped of its World Heritage status. That will perhaps make the incompetent clowns at Sanparks sit up and listen for once. There is no way that the mountain can be marketed as a World Heritage Site and tourist haven with this sort of BS going on.

I cant understand why there isn’t a push for this already…

    • Mike Jul 22, 2015 at 11:32 am #

There has been a push, for years on end. SAN Parks is only good at talking, not actually doing anything. In this instance, we are not even talking about remote areas. Lion’s Head on a weekend! Absolutely they do not care, they are completely incompetent, uncaring, obtuse and perverse. I agree that all parks should be stripped of their status.

Last year someone got stabbed on the beach near where I live. I called 10111 and various other numbers for 30 mins. The call center hung up on me multiple times because they said they need a physical address & cannot got anywhere without an address. In the end no police car came.

  9. Steve Jul 22, 2015 at 11:43 am #

This is not incompetence. This is very much on purpose. White people are being targeted for robbery and when the police are called, they turn a blind eye so that the have-nots can do what they want. Come on all you politically correct libtards, prove me wrong. Whites are very much not welcome in SA, except for their money.

    • Mike Jul 22, 2015 at 12:03 pm #

Thats BS Steve. Everyone is affected by their incompetence. Since you made the above hair brained statement, the burden of proof lies on you to show us where you found evidence of this being a race targeted occurrence.

      • Paul Jul 22, 2015 at 3:42 pm #

Listen to the radio interview Mike….

      • Paul Jul 22, 2015 at 3:45 pm #

OR, watch Carte Blanche insert from last Sunday about what happened to 3 WHITE people in JHB from Edenvale police department…Since Sunday another few cases have come forward….all WHITE victims, assaulted and abused by a…..

        • Hamish Jul 23, 2015 at 11:56 am #

So we can safely assume then, that black or coloured individuals a) are not targeted by criminals and b) receive excellent, polite and competent treatment from the police, can we?
White people (especially tourists) are targeted by the criminals because they are more likely to have valuables with them. The police are mostly equally incompetent, unmotivated and callous regardless of the colour of your skin, so remove your blinkers. Crime is rampant and all of us are affected by it, but those in townships or poorer areas take the brunt of it on all fronts.

      • Steve Jul 22, 2015 at 5:42 pm #

        You keep dreaming buddy.

  10. Ziggx Jul 22, 2015 at 10:33 pm #

The police in this country are an absolute joke.

This is far from an isolated incedent

My experience of police is that if they actually get off their lazy incompetent and unfit overweight buts to do anything it’s not to help it’s to boost their egos by intimidating others and stealing from you by finding something pathetic excuse to lock you up for if you don’t pay them a bribe.
Most crime in this country goes unreported because of the terror the man in the street has for the police.

Most if not all incedents of police catching real criminals in this country are sheer luck as most police are only interested in soft targets they can intimidate and steal from.

If you ask any citizen in this country to describe his experience with the police you will most probably find that his negative terrible and terrifying experiences far outweigh any positive experiences.

The sad thing is they will continue to act like this and most probably get worse as thier attatude is reinforced by the example that our political leaders project and by the utter uselessness and apathy of any agency that could hold them accountable for their actions.

    • michael Jul 23, 2015 at 8:47 am #

None of these interviews serve as proof for your above statement that whites are being targeted. Every South African is under threat from criminals.

  11. Ziggx Jul 22, 2015 at 10:51 pm #

Just two weeks ago I saw an accident that had just happened at an intersection.
I drove 200 meters down the road and saw a metro police officer sitting in his car in the oncoming traffic resulting from the accident.

I pulled up next to him and told him that there was a serious accident just ahead and that they could probably use his help and an ambulance.

The a$$##*€ did up his window and refused to look at me.

He was not interested in doing his job.

  12. Kirk Jul 23, 2015 at 9:15 am #

Miami police are far more on the ball. ZA cops could learn a thing or two from them:

  13. Justin Lawson Jul 23, 2015 at 9:27 am #

Interesting documentary from 2014 called ‘Behind Paradise’. The movie interviews Hout Bay residents who have had their homes invaded and also talks about the police –

  14. jean Jul 23, 2015 at 12:03 pm #

I think a petition should be drawn up and submitted to the World Heritage organization calling for Table Mountain to be stripped of its status. This obviously not the ideal outcome but im afraid it is the only way to force authorities to take the situation seriously.

    • G-Clamp Jul 23, 2015 at 12:37 pm #

      Yes I agree.

Hopefully then SanParks can be removed from management of the park.

  15. Richard Jul 23, 2015 at 2:08 pm #

Someone who is a bit of an “insider” mentioned to me that Sanparks are failing dismally in many of the areas that directly affect the World Heritage Status. Much of the Cape Floristic Kingdom lies within areas controlled by Capenature, and they are doing a far better job of complying with Heritage Site status. It does indeed look like there may be grounds to challenge the role of Sanparks. I don’t know when their current term comes up for review, and how we would do this, but it sounds like all interested parties need to keep their ears to the ground. Also, it seems like the barring access to the Kalk Bay mountains, and the fining, is completely contrary to the agreements regarding a Heritage Site. The fines, apparently, are not worth the paper they appear on and will be thrown out if challenged in court. I, for one, will continue to boulder and walk at Topside. Never mind the fact that the “law enforcers” are conveniently steering clear of the hotspots, and rather targeting innocent, law abiding walkers and climbers with ridiculously petty controls.

    • Mike Jul 23, 2015 at 2:17 pm #

Agreed, we should all be boycotting paying and definitely NOT buying any activity cards. Furthermore, we should boulder and hike wherever we see fit, since all sanparks do is talk talk talk about EIA etc etc. They do nothing about it. Same with crime, talk talk talk. Merle comes on air, more hot air with ZERO result. The fact that tourists get mugged on a weekend, broad daylight in a high traffic zone like Lion’s head is just inexcusable. I for one would fully support a petition to have them permanently removed as custodians to our heritage site. Where do I sign up?

  16. Irene Jul 23, 2015 at 8:47 pm #

I am saddened by some of these comments.

I am a black South African woman who, like many of you, has been a victim of crime. I can assure you that the incompetence of the police department is not reserved for those of a lighter complexion – to think otherwise is incredibly naive.

In addition, referring to people as “apes” is inexcusable. It taints this entire conversation and detracts from the fact that we are facing a seriously problem on our landmarks. I only hope that the disdain you so clearly have can one day be replaced with tolerance and an understanding that people don’t have to be the same to co-exist.

To the matter at hand – it might be a good idea to try and get some of the hiking and trail running groups to come together for a petition or solidarity hike.

    • Mike Jul 28, 2015 at 1:07 pm #

The solution is for whoever runs the parks, to devise effective active policing in these tourist spots and step up arrests and prosecutions. One camera half way up Lion’s Head pathway is just not enough. It is a tall order considering the scale of the entire parks portfolio though. These kinds of criminals are not as organised as gangs would be. If one group gets caught another will quickly take their place. As an aside, there is nothing ‘racist’ about calling someone an ape. It’s the same as calling someone a ‘puppy dog’. It refers to their behaviour, and quite frankly, the way that SANParks behave it’s hard to take them at all seriously anymore. From botched EIP reports, to reports not ever seeing the light of day, harassment by rangers who have not been trained correctly, failure to protect tourists in massively trafficked areas; the list goes on. Lets not make this another race issue. It’s tired now.

  17. Neels Jul 24, 2015 at 11:29 am #

Well said Irene, people that bring race into this should just leave. Relocate.

Our government is useless and I think it suits them to have us divided as a country. Rich hating poor black hating white….hate hate hate. We should open our eyes and hearts and stand together.

You think as a middle class white guy you are so affected by crime? Trying being a young black/ couloured guy living in one of the townships or cape flats.

  18. jacques Jul 24, 2015 at 2:48 pm #

What Irene and Neels said, with you 100% of the way. There are good black, white, brown, etc etc people, and there are bad faknats in the same categories. And I have great respect for the police too, cause there are good and bad ones in there too. And its one of the curses of humanity that we will always be challenged and potentially brought down by the bad. I have no solutions really, but I do for now know what not to do, and that’s generalize that one group is worse than another.

  19. jean Jul 27, 2015 at 11:49 am #

where can the crime and stats for the park be found? even if its just a indication of number of muggings over the past 10 years. Justin?

    • Michael Jul 28, 2015 at 7:52 am #

Good idea. Where can one access the crime stats. I think a good graphic representation of this situation would really show how bad it is

      • Justin Lawson Jul 28, 2015 at 10:47 am #

There are crime stats – I will see if I can get hold of them.

        • Justin Lawson Jul 28, 2015 at 1:55 pm #

Here you go – This graph provides data on Mountain Attacks within the Table Mountain National Park.

          Red = Number of Victimes
          Blue = Number of Muggings

          2015: 2.833 attacks per month

This graph provides data on Mountain Attacks within the Table Mountain National Park.

  20. Justin Lawson Jul 28, 2015 at 10:05 am #

Hout Bay seems to have ‘blown up’ !!!

11 July – Crime wave hits Hout Bay

15 July – Fed up locals torch ‘problem’ Hout Bay building “Jacobs previously told News24 that more than 20 muggings have taken place near the house over the past six months.” –

28 July – Four murders rock Hout Bay

If you are approached by muggers… keep this in mind:
    – 16 year old Ngetu was killed for R100.00 (that’s $8.00).
    – Monezi was murdered six weeks ago and Ngoy was stabbed to death on July 8.
    – 27-year-old Congolese man was stabbed to death after being accosted by three men in a suspected robbery.

The bodies of all four victims were found less than 100m from Hout Bay police station near a local clinic.

  21. Louise Jul 28, 2015 at 11:04 am #

I would suggest that instead of vitriol re SanParks that people make practical suggestions around how to mitigate such incidents. There are multiple entry and exit points on Lions Head which makes it extremely difficult to monitor.

  22. Andy Davies Jul 28, 2015 at 11:43 am #

I guess the stats regarding crime wave / murders in Houtbay kind of undermine the theory that only whiteys are targeted. All one needs to look at is some crime stats per area to see that our poorer brothers and sisters have it much tougher than most of the visitors to this website. I am dissapointed some of my climbing brothers have dragged this forum down into the gutter – I thought we were better than that?
Also lets be a bit careful about blaming all police for the problem. There are some good policemen and women working out there in very difficult conditions. Lets give them our support. Same applies to ESKOM by the way 😉 And if you see incompetence / laziness then do something about it – else you are part of the problem.
Lastly SANP need to get the boot off TM – they are only interested in running it like a business and don’t give a toss about the users.

  23. Jean Jul 28, 2015 at 11:52 am #

Louise, your suggestion is unfortunately about 5 years behind the curve and no longer relevant.

Justin, im more after TMNP crime stats. I want to bring it under the World Heritage Organisation attention.

  24. Gertlu Jul 28, 2015 at 1:27 pm #

I suspect the only feesable solution here would be to fence off the mountain, or at least the most popular areas like Devils Peak, Lions Head, Table Mountain Frontal etc. Having a reasonable entry fee would then ensure that most riff-raff would avoid it. Much like the rationale for a entrance fee at a club. The monitoring would be easier and SANP would make some money.
