Mel just keeps on nonchalantly ticking off the Waterval Boven classics. After 5 days on the route, unlocking beta, building the needed power and belief, dealing with the noisy film crew, sharing psyche from the gawking climbers below and mom’s ever present golden belay … Thinking that 8c (34) is a more fair grade, @meljansevanrensburg will soon have to get into bolting, trad or traveling to find more challenging stuff. Not so keen on trad he says… Life in Orange at the Superbowl in BOVEN was opened by @alexandermegos at 35.

Well done Mel! And thanks for inspiring me to try it!
Congratulations dude, super impressive send and love the addition of the downgrade of an Alex Megos line:’) That’s an illustrious future in the making!!!
Congrats! But what is a golden belay? :-/
5 Days little dude…that route is not near your limit! Great sendage!
I heard a rumor that Megos downgraded Shear Force? What’s the current hardest Boven line then?
“I heard a rumor that Megos downgraded Shear Force? What’s the current hardest Boven line then?”
That was just a rumour. We probably need more strong climbers to come and give it consensus but the three hardest climbs currently would be Rodan, Shear Force and Life in Orange. All 3 different styles but my gut says they might all settle on 34 (8c). Only time will tell…
Probably a term invented to make the belayer feel part of the sending “team”.
