Rocklands : Bouldering Impact and Management Survey

Those who have been to Rocklands will know what a prized asset this world-renowned bouldering area is.  The area has grown in popularity and more people are visiting every year.  As a result, the integrity of the landscape is being compromised and there are concerns over some of the impacts that the sport is having on the area.

The recent Rocklands Clean-up 2018 is emblematic of this.  The concerns have warranted academic research.

Based in the Department of Environmental and Geographical Science at the University of Cape Town, I am conducting research which aims to understand perceptions of bouldering impacts, management and ecotourism in Rocklands. It will inform which management strategies are most appropriate to ensure the sustainability of the sport and socio-economic development of the region.

As part of this research project I am conducting a survey into the perceptions of climbers around the impacts and management of bouldering in Rocklands.
