Tranquilitas Adventure Farm is proud to announce the installation of our first Automatic Belays.
Three Outdoor Perfect Descent Automatic belays have been acquired and installed on the most popular routes, with more to come.
Ruth Behr, co-owner of Tranquilitas Adventure Farm, says: “Mike and I have a vision for Tranquilitas. We want to turn it into an outdoor climbing and cycling playground. For young and old. Beginners to advanced. It’s easy to get on a bike and cycle one of our beginner (green) bike trails. But with climbing it’s a lot harder for beginners to get into it. So we decided to do something to attract more beginners.”
Mike Behr, Tranquilitas co-owner: “My construction company Wild Exposure are actually the importers of Perfect Descent. We have installed quite a few automatic belays at outdoor walls around the country. I have one on my home training wall outside. So I approached Perfect Descent and they gave us a really great discount for show-casing their product at a world-class crag like Boven. Yes these automatic belays will be controversial amongst some outdoor climbers. But I think they are the way to go for top-roping!”

Cally Bishop, CityROCK General Manager: “Automatic belays have been phenomenally successful for us at CityROCK. We just added two new ones in fact. People walk in, rent shoes and harness and 5 minutes later, the first-time climber is having fun. However, the transition from indoors to the great outdoors is actually quite difficult. You need to own a rope and draws, learn to lead climb outdoors, clean anchors, etc. And that all assumes you have a willing and able climbing partner that can lead-belay. Most beginners just own shoes and harness and top rope at the gym, and never make it outside. So these new Boven automatic belays will make it so much easier for beginners to experience Boven’s world class rock climbing.”

Allister Fenton, head coach at CityROCK Johannesburg, says: “We always try to set great routes at the gym, but nothing beats a really great Boven route like, Little Bonsai, or Grizzly Behr. I would like to see Mike install one on Lotters Desire, my current project. I think it would see a lot of traffic!”
“This is the future of rock climbing” says visiting French climber and guide Guillaume Vales.
Perfect Descent Climbing Systems produces superior auto belay devices and is the official auto belay of the International Federation of Sport Climbing. All units are sealed for outstanding performance both indoors and outdoors. Perfect Descent Autobelays are available from in South Africa from Wild Exposure.
