Paws (7b), De Hoek, Oudtshoorn

Brenda Marx graciously allowed me to post her beta of Paws as this week’s beta binge.

South African limestone. We have very little, but the quality of the Oudtshoorn main crag is superb. Paws, the classic 26/7b, ranks among the must do routes in the country.  With the crux high up, this route is all about finding sneaky rests and being able to recover in awkward positions.

Update:  I’ve included Wes’s video below as, visually its awesome (seeing the entire line and crag – the zooming out starts at 1:00).

Here is me in my fat days doing the crux move. I still basically do it the same way, only now it’s so much easier.

That’s some really epic footage! Very cool to be able to see it from this angle. Cool beta too!

Thanks! I was way too fat and weak to do it Brenda’s way. I find I can shake out on that backstep, just before reaching the carrot which I step up to rather than reach when I do it now.

Cool footage! Paws makes you feel heavy, whether you’re really heavy or not…
