Paarl Rocks: Sands of Time 1st pitch 3rd bolt hanger missing
We started up the 1st pitch of Sands of Time, not the fun pitch, the real first pitch, next to the gully with the old fraying rope (used to avoid the first pitch)
and the 3rd bolt's hanger is gone.
and the 4th bolt has a D-clamp apparently used to bail.
What's going on? this is completely absurd. Shouldn't it rather be the other way around?
Why is the 3rd bolt gone? It makes for quite a stupid runout.

Either some idiot removed it, or the bolt was loose and it came off.
Whatever the case, the next person to climb Sands should take a hanger and nut (is the nut missing?) with to replace the missing hanger.

Take a spring washer with. If you need one [and hanger and nut for that matter], swing past my spot for a cooldrink

I recommend a Nylock Nut- a lock washer is cheaper though!
Really, its not that bad...I think it's my shoes...

Any danger of galvanic corrosion?

Hey Guys,
anyone know the current status of the offending bolt? Has the hanger been replaced?

We climbed it a few weeks ago.
All was fine.

I replaced the hanger and the nut and put up a separate post.

I just did Sands and lo and behold the 3rd hanger is not there and the manky mailon is still on the 4th clip.
I thought this was resolved. Is someone stealing the hangers? I'll pop by Andy and I'll get a hanger and I'll glue the nut onto the bolt so that it can't "fall" off again.

You are only as good as your last piece

Re: Paarl Rocks: Sands of Time 1st pitch 3rd bolt hanger missing
I climbed Sands on Thursday 8 December having been warned of the missing hanger. Of course I had left the spanner required at home (I purchased a hanger and bolt - for the washer and nut). I had also left the plan B wire nut behind. I hung a sling on the stub and prayed.
Yesterday (11 December) I went back with nut and spanner and replaced the hanger. So its good again for now.
It appears that there is indeed a hanger pilferer around.
I wonder what the implications are if someone climbs a route and falls unprotected having found that a hanger has been pilfered. I think it could be serious for the pilferer should he ever be discovered. I'd certainly have something to say to him.
I did not remove the oval mild steel 'biner' on the last bolt. Sure, corrosion is happening there. It should be removed. Take a shifting spanner along and some Q20?
The higher bolt at the top of the second pitch could do with some tightening if anyone is going past there any time soon.
This is such a fun route. Testing, exciting and good to have some slings along to loop onto the rock protrusions that fortunately abound

Thanks WarlockClimbing. A nice hanger will be so much better than the random wires and slings we've been using.
*Maybe not on thread topic but I'd like to just remind everyone climbing at Paarl to keep to the 7pm gate closing time.
Last Friday we did a SoT after work dash. The gates stood open so we were didn't take the 7pm gate time to seriously and got to the gate at 7:15 and it was locked, properly locked. Had to call Cape nature after work hours and was rescued by the very professional and friendly guard at 8pm. He took our number plate and said they will not let us in if we we do it again.
He let us know that they have been having problems with climbers recently not respecting gate times and then instead of calling they have damaged the gate and lock to get out.
Let us not make this an access issue ? Be better (faster) than us and respect the gate times, and if you are late, don't force your way out.

There is nothing more beautiful than a well dressed alpine butterfly.
