Has anyone bought from Johan Louis Burger?

Post by Snyman » Wed Jun 19, 2019 6:59 pm

Hi All,

I think I may have been scammed by Johan Louis Burger.

I had posted here on Garage Sale that I was in need of a pair of UK 6.5 or 7 climbing shoes. I then received a WhatsApp from Johan Louis Burger (063****474) and he told me he was selling shoes the exact size I needed and sent me various photos. I paid him and when I sent him the proof of payment I asked him to send the tracking info for the PostNet to PostNet delivery, he then told me he sent the shoes on Wednesday (when I WhatsApped him on Thursday asking when he will be sending them after not hearing from him) but since then has been ignoring my WhatsApps asking him to send me the tracking number but my calls are going straight through to voicemail. I've been into PostNet and the ladies assure me that if he had sent them on Wednesday then they would have been delivered by now and they looked through all the parcels checking for me, but unfortunately, there was no sign of them.

I'm wondering if anyone has previous bought anything from Johan Louis Burger and can either help put my mind at ease that maybe I haven't been scammed and there is a genuine reason for his lack of contact (if you do know him, please ask him to send Amelia the tracking number), alternatively I want this to act as a warning to anyone who is offered a pair of UK 6.5 / EU 40 Evolv Elektra blue climbing shoes, that good luck, I've already paid for them and not received them a week after he said he sent them.

The thought I have been scammed after posting on here really saddens me as I've made a few purchases through the Garage Sale and have always dealt with great people and received exactly what they said they were selling.

P.S is there anyone selling any UK 6.5 or 7 shoes and willing to actually post them when I pay you?

Amelia

There is a guy that seems to be targeting this forum.
Did he ask you to pay by cash send (refuse to give his bank details)?
Did he say he was in a small town?
Low post count (in this case no forum account).
I have been caught once, and almost caught twice.

Sorry about your loss. -school fees.

Googling for his name I found the following scam alert on an aviation website, which looks like the same cellphone number.

Yes he asked for eWallet, didn't mention being from a small town. Told me the shoes were his daughters and was quite chatty up until I made the payment. Feeling like such a fool, I had searched his name on here, no result. On Facebook, there are quite a few by his name. Also on Google and nothing came up, I should have included the word scam as that brings up the Avcom scam alert.

Now if someone searches his name on here this will come up, but chances are he will now just use another fake name. If its the same phone number and someone tries searching that its 0631412474. I hope that number now gets found by spam callers!

You live and you learn, at least in terms of climbing gear R400 is at the lower end of what he could have tried to scam me for compared to if I was looking for something else.

Although in this case his name got some results when checking for a scammer, it's not a good check. These people use different names all the time.
Another check you can do, though again it's not reliable is a reverse image serach with google, where you give google an image they send to see if it comes up elsewhereon the web.
But the biggest red flag is the payment method. Anyone with nothing to hide should have no issue giving bank details for an eft. Scammers will not want to give bank details. For me that's a deal breaker.

Hi All,

@Ruan, thanks for starting this thread and bring this to our attention. This is the 2nd confirmed fraud deal on ClimbZA. I was also contacted by an administrator of a SA 4x4 Community forum about a user (SidB) who was operating on this site and the 4x4 one.

Interestingly there was a conversation about fraud on the radio this morning (involving Gumtree and cars).

Please be vigilant. Should anyone be suspicious of a user(s), please contact me and I will do what I can.

Hmmm the forum has become so boring with all these buying & selling posts.

Makes me long for a good old pointless trad vs sport mud slinging fest.

Apparently the aviation guys who were scammed say he has been caught.

Excellent :thumleft:

It is estimated that the 26-year-old Marius Smit has fraudulently obtained several millions of Rands since he started the scam five years ago.

People who have been deceived by the same stranger, and suspect it is the same person, can call Rossouw at 079 240 3491 or send an email to consultingdetectivesbloem@gmail.com

I'm not convinced it's the same guy that was targeting us (climbers), but I guess it's good he was caught anyway.
