Hello Fellow Climbers,

Hope you are doing well.

Has anyone recently (within the last 5 years or so) climbed "Shipley's Frontal" on Groot Hangklip?

If so, please get in touch, as I would like to get information about this route from someone who has done it.

Thank you.

Kind regards.
Heinrich

Hey there,

I've climbed it a couple of times, what would you like to know?

Hi Nic,
Long time since I climbed the Frontal but would like to take a visiting climber up it when the weather improves.
Is the slog up from the Hotel to the old bunker and beyond reasonable or is it totally bushed up?
Thanks and regards,
Mike Scott

@Mike, I did it a few years ago and the approach was fine

Thanks Tristan, good to know, and I hope Heinrich gets to enjoy the climb as it is a classic.

Hi Mike

The approach is actually very nice. There's a path from behind the hotel to an old building right at the foot of the Shipley's arete. Then a fairly easy walk to the start which is a bit more bushy but definitely nothing bad at all

Thanks Nic, appreciate the information as that slope has varied considerably depending on fires recently or not.
Presume the gully descent on the left side is still as it was.
Now to wait for some good settled days.
Kind regards,
Mike

Have a look at the wiki, Phlip and Danie have set up fixed rap points near Cosmic Crypt that you can use to get back down rather than the walk off, if you prefer

@Mike, if you do the entire Shipley's I would not recommend a scramble down to the highest rap point (sling around a tree) above Cosmic Crypt. If you opt to climb only to the pitch before the cave stance, a walk to the right along the ledge should bring you to the tree rap. From there it's an awkward ~40m to the top of Baboon Highway (may be tricky to find, unless you study the image on the wiki carefully), another ~40m rap to the ledge below the roofs and a final ~40m to the ground. If you opt to do this, take some extra tat as reinforcement, just in case.

The few times we've been to the very top, we walked down the back along the hiking trail. Was not aware of the gully descent on the left. If you end up doing this, please let me know the beta or update the wiki, as the walk down the back can be time consuming.

I haven't been to hangklip in a while, but am looking to establish a rap route a little to the right of Imaginate. If my calculations are correct it will be 3, max 4 raps to the ground.

Enjoy! And please let us know how it goes.
Phlip

Thanks for the info about the Rap point Philip, and I am wary of abseiling at the best of times was that is when a lot of climbing accidents happen.
I will use the gully as i used to know it well when I climbed there regularly in the 60's/70's.
It is quite straightforward (easy) and easy to find coming off the summit.
I attach a picture of the last time I used the descent Gully on a club meet when Martyn Trainor led us up it.
You will see the gully is round the corner of the ridge with the D route etc on it.

Thanks Mike.
Appreciate the info. Will def check the gully out next time.
It does look a lot shorter than the walk around the back.
