Yemen — Adventure climbing in one of the world’s most dangerous countries.
Plagued as a terrorism breeding ground with decades of political unrest and tribal conflicts, Yemen is not a climbing destination for anyone—ever. Off the coast of this desperate country, however, is Socotra Island, a stunning paradise of ecological diversity, white sand beaches, warm turquoise waters, blistering heat, and otherworldly granite spires.
Brittany Griffith, along with her husband, Jonathan Thesenga, and photographer, Andrew Burr, traveled there in 2013 for a climbing adventure that she calls her favorite of all time. She will share stories and photos of their first ascents, as well as tales of island beauty that's in stark contrast to the challenges and dangers of mainland Yemen.
