“Today, Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily issued a recall, subject to user inspection, of carabiners, quickdraws and nylon runners because of the possibility of product irregularities.” Black Diamond and its marketing reps issued that statement this morning February 4th, 2016.
In an email to CBJ, John Dicuollo, Senior PR Account Manager for Black Diamond wrote:
“In some carabiners, the gate rivets (in solid gate carabiners) and wire ends (in wiregate carabiners) attaching the gate to the carabiner body may not be properly manufactured, potentially resulting in the gate becoming detached. Additionally, in some screwgate carabiners, the locking sleeve may not have been correctly assembled, resulting in a locking carabiner that does not lock properly. The recall related to the nylon runners is due to a small number found to contain a tape slice, resulting in a product that is not load bearing and will fail under standard use.”
No accidents have been reported; however, in the interest of customer safety, Black Diamond has decided to voluntarily issue a recall to ask users to inspect their equipment and return products that are in question to Black Diamond for a replacement.
Black Diamond has set up two very informative pages that outline all the information you need to determine if you have product that is effected by the recall.

For runners go here.

You may still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not. Cat Stevens

For anyone who has Black Diamond carabiners and slings that fall in the recall specifications below, you could inspect your gear yourselves to see if there are any defects.
If you are unsure if your gear falls within the bad bunch, please feel free to take a drive to one of our shops and have us inspect it for you. Please note that this is called a "voluntary recall" which means the alert level is very low, as in no accidents have happened due to these possible faults so far. We have contacted our suppliers in SA and are still waiting to hear back from them on the exact procedure needed IF anyone needs to return defective stock directly to them.
FYI, we have inspected all our Black Diamond stock in both our Cape Town and Joburg shops, and have found no defects as mentioned.

Jeez Black Diamond!! What is up with your BASIC quality control if those basic manufacturing issues can get through your safety inspections protocols? Make's one really wonder about the rigour of the inspections, if any.
Luckily no one has been hurt. I certainly wouldn't class that as a "very low level alert". I'd imagine I'm not the only one who has lost some faith in the quality of BD gear. Goes to show one needs to be able to do basic safety checks on ones gear, even the new stuff.

Most BD stuff is manufactured in China. I started switching to DMM a few years ago.
Admittedly, QC issues can happen at any company. But these kinds of things reaffirm my choice. (And the strange correlation between "made in China" products and low-quality counterfeits).

BAbycoat, DMM had a recall just last year... did you miss it?
My point is, the error factor is minuscule, most probably as rare as shark attacks. But if there's a problem it can be bad, I know.
These things happen, we need to learn to roll with it.
Just sayin.

@Turtle ... thanks for the heads-up - I was travelling, and missed the recall.
But, just as shark attacks are more common in certain areas, recalls seem to have an uncanny correlation with jurisdiction of manufacture (in my, probably biased, view).

Everyone on the China bandwagon...
Coincidentally, as far as I know, this recall happened AFTER Black Diamond moved production from China to the US?
