Birds nesting at Silvermine Main Crag

Post by tyronec01 »

Hey there,

My wife and I were climbing at Main crag on Saturday. Didn't realise that the Kestrel's were nesting and chicks have possibly hatched already. Got a friendly reminder from them when they nudged my wife on the head as she was cleaning our draws on Pistolero. We left after we got our draws down.

I didn't see any closure signs up so just take note if you are heading in that direction.

Climb safe!

2020 November Update. We attempted to climb at main crag over the weekend and the Kestrel's birds were swarming and attacking anyone who climbed on any of the routes. So best to avoid the crag entirely.

It's best to inform the rangers of the nesting birds - the crag needs to officially closed for the duration of the nestling season (as it is every year).

The Kestrels are nesting at main crag. They go for climbers on routes across the crag. Didn't get to inform the rangers, so if you head up, maybe do so. And best avoid the crag for the time being, for the kestrels sake and also because it is terrifying to lead with those guys going for your head!

I agree we should avoid the crag for a month or so, or at least the routes either side of the nest (pistolero, josie get your gun and cool hand luke). Climbers should self-regulate if SAN Parks aren't doing the necessary :thumright

I've just put up a post about the birds nesting. Please confirm if it's just Main crag or also at BOG? I used an old post from 2017. Let me know & I will amend.

Why avoid the whole crag when it's just one or two routes that can be avoided. And no birds at Blaze.
So this is not an official TMNP closure. Ricky, if you can please not repost my old article from 2017 - very uncool to just do that without asking me.

I received word from climbers that the Kestrel was attacking climbers across the entire Main Crag.
This occurred last weekend.
No word regarding Blaze of Glory.

I was trying to be helpful. Your article was informative and explained the problem with pictures.
Because I was unsure, I also asked here on the forum about Blaze.
I apologise for my very uncool-ness.

I have removed your article from the recent posts.

He's a link to it for anyone interested in what was the issue re birds in 2017 - https://www.climbing.co.za/2017/12/silv ... s-nesting/

People should just avoid Main Crag until end-Dec. It's less than 2 months. Please, do the right thing.
